The highlights of my week so far: finalizing details of collaborations with colleagues, kid starting well at a new school, and the latte my longtime barista made just for me after not seeing me most of the summer. This made my day! #Cats

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Sumit Sarkar and his wife Tanika, an incredible scholar herself, when I was working on my PhD at the University of Washington. They each had a powerful impact on me. Charu Gupta captures him so well in this piece.

Another day of using my tiny social media presence to share beauty and goodness 💜 May these words find you knowing and savoring the deliciousness of early August, the miracle of getting to devour--but slowly--all that light. #MaryOliver

I've been tied up with a writing project different from my usual stuff. Kid went to Seattle to visit his grandparents for a bit, so I wrote him some stories so we could stay connected & he could keep up with his reading. A fun side project! Parenthood continues to amuse 😂

Continuing revision work on my essay today. It's kind of breaking my heart taking my spectacular moment with a great egret out. I hope I don't (r)egret it. 😂 #AmWriting

It's Stone Gossard's 60th birthday and would have been Chris Cornell's 62nd. There's that magical creative energy in the ether...I'm a daily writer, so I would have put in my time anyway, but today's one not to miss 💜

Brandon Loomis has a fantastic long-form article explaining the water crisis in the western U.S. I learned a lot from this piece.

New parenting level unlocked: we finished Edgar Allan Poe's "The Gold-Bug," reading the pages of decoding the secret message with great interest. Then we decided to make up our own secret code and write messages to each other in it. This kid! 🥹😍😂 #ReadingWithKids

Coming back after an absolutely incredible week-long intensive creative nonfiction workshop. Ready to continue writing and revising, buoyed by the amazing love and support poured into me by so many. And ready to pass it on to whoever's coming up behind me. 💜 #WritingCommunity #VONA

This discussion of all the ways that the humanities matter (including complex thinking and problem-solving, doing jobs the world needs even though they often pay less, etc) is currently getting less traction than my post re: "yay Muppet Christmas Carol." Would love it if you'd weigh in on this too.
My latest: "Numerous studies show that majors in the humanities—typically, in departments of English, history, philosophy, religious studies, classics and languages—lead students to employment and life satisfaction outcomes as positive as those for majors traditionally championed as 'practical.'”

Ready for the remainder of my Paper #1 "exit interviews" with composition students today. Talking with them first and understanding what they tried to do helps me respond more effectively to them as writers when I leave written feedback. This is how we do "accent on the individual" at Ashland. 💜💛
