Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

NYU’s full-time contract faculty has grown tenfold over the past 20 years. These workers often have responsibilities equivalent to their tenured colleagues, but lack commensurate pay and protections. After 15 months of bargaining, the 900+ professors who make up CFU-UAW are going on strike.
