Committed to fostering a future of work that prioritizes individual fulfillment and positive societal impact.
The more capable AI becomes, the more valuable curiosity becomes.

My conversation with Salil Kulkarni reinforced something I see in my own work: the future belongs to people who question processes, anticipate needs and connect ideas others miss.

AI Can Process Information. Curiosity Creates Innovation. - Highlight Georgia
According to Kulkarni, a longtime technology executive and Chief Strategy and Information Officer at Virima, the answer comes down to learning how to think differently.

One thing change leadership has taught me: finding meaning in something painful doesn't mean deciding it was good.

Sometimes the life we didn't plan teaches us things the life we wanted never could.

My conversation with Kent Jones reminded me of that.

AI makes answers abundant. That makes questioning assumptions even more valuable. The future may belong less to those with the answers and more to those willing to ask what everyone else missed.

I’ve been thinking about “change debt”: what accumulates when organizations move from one transformation to the next without asking what the last one cost people. Before calling someone resistant, leaders should ask: What are they moving through?

Your Next Change Initiative Could Break Your Organization

My conversation with Kent Jones changed how I think about resilience. His MS diagnosis brought uncertainty that couldn't be planned away or solved. Sometimes resilience isn't bouncing back. It's learning how to keep moving forward.

What happens when getting the answer is no longer the hard part?

AI makes information abundant. Leadership still requires deciding what matters, questioning assumptions and navigating tradeoffs.

Maybe the scarce skill of the AI era isn’t knowledge. It’s judgment.

I’ve learned to pay attention when someone challenges both options on the table. They may not be resisting change. They may see a possibility everyone else missed. Creativity in change leadership starts by asking: What is possible now?

Who are you when everything familiar disappears?

Career changes, illness, business setbacks and unexpected transitions can strip away the things we use to define ourselves.

Maybe rebuilding starts by asking: What is still here?

I keep coming back to agency as we integrate AI. People don't just need training. They need a voice in how their work changes. The leadership question isn't only “Will employees trust AI?” It's “Will they trust how we're integrating it?”

I think participation is becoming a form of job security.

Not because it guarantees employment, but because learning early, asking questions and staying close to change builds capabilities that travel with you.

The future belongs to people willing to help shape it.

One lesson keeps showing up in AI conversations: people aren't resisting technology as much as they're responding to a loss of influence. When the stakes are real and people have no voice, the brain shifts into defense. Better change starts with shared ownership.

I don't think leaders should stop employees from experimenting with AI. I think they should pay attention to what employees are building. The challenge is turning personal innovation into organizational capability before it becomes organizational fragmentation.

Everyone is calling Shadow AI a security problem. I think it's an organizational design problem. Employees aren't just bringing new tools. They're building intelligence systems that quietly become part of how work gets done. Leaders need to design for that reality.

AI getting better does not make human expertise less important. It changes where expertise matters. The opportunity is not competing with AI on the first draft. It is developing the judgment, perspective and creativity to take what AI produces and make it significantly better.

AI lets me build things I could never build before. That doesn’t make me an expert in building them. What don’t I know enough to ask? The more AI expands what we can do, the more I value the people who can see what the rest of us miss. sherryheyl.substack.com/p/t...
The More AI Can Do, the More Expertise Matters

We say we want people ready to lead, then give them little authority to make decisions.

As AI handles more tasks, developing human judgment becomes even more important. We need people prepared to take us from step three to ten.

The biggest AI lesson isn't about the technology. It's about people. Readiness gives people the skills. Guardrails provide direction. Trust gives them the confidence to use both. Organizations that understand this won't just adopt AI faster. They'll adapt better.
September 4, 2026 at 10:00 PM
I keep coming back to this idea with AI: progress doesn’t have to be dramatic to be transformative.

Make one accountable improvement. Learn from it. Build on it. Keep human judgment involved.

The future may belong to organizations that become better one deliberate step at a time.
