I loved the romances between Meya and her two loves and how both unfolded differently but just as naturally. When we meet Meya, she is already on the run and just trying to survive, the full weight of what she has endured has not yet hit her when even more trauma comes her way. This book is about vampires and steamy romance, yes. But it's also about Meya re-learning how to be a human being and finding herself again after so much hardship has beaten her down. There is a scene at the start that sticks in my mind because even those the people who hurt Meya are dead, it's clear she still doesn't feel safe yet; her mind is still living through the trauma even though her body is safe (or as safe as it can be in the castle of a vampire....). This is true for most trauma survivors. It takes a long time for the mind to finally realize the danger is past and this was so perfectly portrayed in this book. What he needed was to go home to his church, to be amongst humans again, and to be free of this strange angel who would keep a person as a pet. Tristen scowled at her, biting his tongue. She seemed immune to his scathing glares, even a bit entertained by them. Her shoulders shook with silent laughter and her eyes crinkled with fond amusement. “No wonder you’re grouchy. Go inside,” Zophiel commanded, shooing him back into the kitchen. “We’ll get some food in you and then make it an early night. You too, Izra. Come!” The demon came bounding after them on all fours like an excited puppy called for dinner. He nearly bowled the priest over as he passed, prompting a chuckled command from the fallen angel for him to be ‘easy.’ Tristen’s mind boggled. What in the literal Hell had he gotten himself into?

Manor of Shadows by Joachim Heijndermans (Goodreads Author) Read My fav BB book so far 🙌 It starts off setting the scene for the entirety of the book: gothic. Spooky, dark manor, grim countryside, secrets... As if inheriting a chunk of land, house, and a large staff isn't enough to change one's life, this one comes with a lot of strangeness that quickly turns poor Mary's entire worldview upsidedown. Was there a murder? An accident? What happened to the nearby town that makes all the people there so afraid? Why is the church in ruins? Why does Mary hear voices? Why do things sometimes turn yellow? And just why are these sexual feelings she hadn't had to deal with before suddenly waking up? Mary has more questions than answers and for every answer she manages to pry free she gets three more questions in return. The entire story is well-crafted—as it needs to be for a mystery to be satisfying—from setting to characters. There is one character I instantly disliked, and disliked even more as the story progressed, and yet by the end Joachim managed to make me change my mind. That was some good writing 💜 I was definitely rooting for certain characters to end up together, and in that sense this book can be classified as a capital R Gothic Romance 😌 As for the spice... The cover might hint at what you can expect: eldritch goodness 🙌 though I bet not a single person can predict the "climax" scene of the book and what happens there 😏 It definitely left me flabbergasted and impressed. If you enjoy gothic horror/romance with an eldritch mystery and plenty of spice—and are not afraid of a moresome—I highly recommend picking up this book and enjoying the ride. Have some tea with honey while you read and set the light in your room to a dim, yellow glow.
