we're all eking by indefinitely on any old hardware storage and memory we can use, bewitched by some Soviet curse, and yet every basic type of service, smart device, app, and software or OS version update is designed to require more exclusive dedicated memory

Perversely fascinating to see new NAS and RAID-capable arrays coming out these days which are reasonably priced and innovative

We tried to nominate him for an honorary degree at McMaster but he didn’t really want it since he had one from McGill. We nominated him for his contributions to the understanding of religion.
On this day in 1934, Leonard Cohen was born.
One of Canada's greatest musicians, he is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also earned two Governor General's Awards, the Order of Canada and four Junos.

This is an excellent full history of the show and people involved, and the long road to this series being made.
MST3K is back up in space watching cheesy movies. The writing is as sharp as you'd expect from 20 years of Rifftrax, and 10 of MST. The movie is perfectly disastrous. You wonder why they haven't gotten to it before. Your mileage may vary on whether it's actually funny.

Deliberating all evening whether to change my desktop background to a Caspar David Friedrich painting or a Moebius. Couldn't decide so I defaulted to the safe usual choice (something awe-inducing from the NASA or US Geo Agency's picture-of-the-day archives).

a mundane but impressively hideous crisis of modern life: the complicated multi-step cleaning process it is to remove, from anything at all, that adhesive gunk left by cheap generic retail stickers

the Hamilton discourse is really just: 1) H was fine but also very oversaturated as a phenomenon, and 2) the point at which something is the most culturally uncool is in the decade after its initial peak influence

“pervert glasses” is the right idea, but much more effective I think to brand them as “gooner glasses”. anything anyone says in defense of their use is immediately hit with a barrage of “ok gooner”

gotta respect French cuisine for keeping the techniques the same as they were before the invention of electricity (constant stirring, all the time)

I haven’t seen The Odyssey yet, but not surprised at people saying the long runtime is imperceptible. Nolan’s style is recognizable by how his movies are meticulously edited to continuously flow smoothly, at times feeling almost like a montage.

if you've never done it, highly recommend being sick in bed while binging a Criterion Channel special collection all at once in a week/end like it's a streaming TV show. I did this with one of their past Noir collections and it beamed the genre blueprint into my psyche by the end
