Welcoming 2025, here are a couple of photos from my fav shoot this past year: regal blooms of the saguaro cactus in the back garden. It must be roughly 36 years old, having bloomed for the first time in 2023. I got these pics from the top of a ladder... Next summer will be a taller challenge!

A juvenile cactus wren -- a bird with the ridiculously long Latin name Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus. Two siblings were sticking close to the nest (in a cholla) as Mom and Dad, not far away, tried to distract me. Photo taken at Piedra Lisa Canyon on April 9, 2026.

Catclaw acacia (Senegalia greggii) with bees. This native desert shrub/small tree is the delight of bees during the late spring bloom season. And it appears that we have entered late spring already here in the Sonora!

I was getting annoyed at the seagulls being blown into my photos by the gale, little blurry blobs flying so fast I couldn’t freeze them in shot without crazy ISO, but now I realise that they portray the reality of being in that storm. Feel the wind in your hair through a photo!
