A roasted, toasty salad with crispy cabbage, charred cauliflower, and a sharp tahini dressing is perfect for this gusty fall day. The best moment is when the vegetables just begin to soften against the dressing -- each bite is both crackly and tender.

This is my go-to weeknight-friendly (i.e. everything is done, including the nonnegotiable grilled cheese alongside, in under an hour) tomato soup. Grape or cherry tomatoes do the heavy lifting here, providing flavor, nuance, and sweetness.

Happy first day of fall, and first day of Mom's Apple Cake Season to all of us. This forever favorite cake is an avalanche of apples, a tiny bit of batter, and a cascade of cinnamon baked into a hulking mass of fall awesomeness in a tube pan.

If you've ever made breakfast burritos only to find them to be a staggering amount of work, this is the recipe for you -- the sheet pan is 100% easier. I include instructions for freezing and defrosting; future you is so glad you made extra.

Really simple, any night-friendly, breading-and-frying-free eggplant parmesan that's baked until blistered, cozy, and absolutely spoonable, with stretches of cheese trying to drag each spoonful back to the pan. Spoiler: It will fail; you will win.

If you haven't fallen in love with chocolate babka yet, the only reason could be that you haven't tried it. Don't be intimidated; they're not half as complicated as they look. Even the messiest assemblies still bake into deeply glossy, bronzed bittersweet loaves.

This is the swirly, fudgy, luxurious intersection of a brownie and cheesecake and there’s nowhere else I’d like to be right now. Raise your hand if you remember when I made these for labor and delivery nurses for a sweet kid who turns 17 today!

New! Holding onto the last gasp of summer with an almost no-stir tomato risotto that's uncluttered enough to let the tomatoes shine. Basil, parmesan, and butter round it out. Crispy frizzled red onions provide fragrance and depth, and a crispy finish.

A dream of a late summer, not-too-heavy chowder with fresh corn and beans, finished with salty cheese, chili powder, and a squeeze of lime juice. Baked tortilla chips on the side for all the crunch.

Broccoli rubble (crunchy bits quick-cooked with a sinus-clearing volume of garlic, pepper flakes, lemon zest, juice and pecorino) are draped with a slice of provolone and broiled until blistered and collapsed in an open-face sandwich that's all I want to eat.

This week's Smitten Kitchen Digest celebrates 20 years of SK with a love letter to the people (you, yes you!) who have made it possible and a list of what I consider the 20 most iconic site recipes to date. Tell me if there are any I missed. Cheers!

If you can read about something called a magic cobbler that you make more or less entirely in the pan you bake it and not have it in the oven 15 minutes later, you're made of stronger stuff than me.

A pinnacle-of-late-summer baked grain dish that has all of the decadence of a pasta bake -- tomatoes, gooey cheese, and a crisp, burnished top. Farro, small, nutty and slightly chewy, provides heft while letting the vegetables star. We love this.

The perfect freezer-to-toaster waffle [cough, Deb-Os], crisp on the outside and tender inside with a heavenly aroma, and it couldn’t be easier: a one-bowl, butter and yogurt-enriched batter.

Dry, beleaguered honey cake is no way to kick off 5787. This best-in-category classic adapted from Marcy Goldman is the kind you make every year -- deeply spiced, great crumb, and very cozy. It gets better as it has time to rest, honestly, just like me.

A bronzed, woven challah with swirls of fig inside, fragrant with olive oil and orange zest. A little sweet, a little savory, this is my forever favorite challah, a High Holiday staple with leftovers that yield unparalleled french toast.

The 5-ingredient brisket I’ve been cheating on all my other brisket recipes with. It's deeply flavorful, with an aroma so heady you will know instantly that you’re in the right place, I hope it’s the last brisket recipe you’ll ever need.

A favorite late-summer pasta -- just roasted tomatoes, eggplant and garlic, blended into an easy, robust, velvety sauce. I've made this year -- 19 years and counting! -- right around now and invite you to join me.

A small-diced salad heaped on a great swirl of hummus to be scooped with grilled pita wedges is the only thing I want to eat for the rest of the summer. With a few chocolate ice cream sandwich intermissions, for balance and stuff.

Perfectly smoky/charred, deeply flavorful baba ganoush/mutabal, no open fire pit or outdoor grill required. Blended with tahini, garlic, lemon juice and seasonings, served with pita wedges and a giant tomato-cucumber salad, this is summer dinner bliss.

A two-berry pie with a gorgeous hue and the fluffiest cobblestone of a crumb topping. Swap equal amounts of another fruit combination, if you wish. Just don't skip the topping.
