8/ Perhaps this is the new etiquette. Describe the smoke. Condemn the flames. Identify who brought the petrol. Even point to the person holding the match. But don’t, whatever you say, mention the arson.

there’s just something about how even as little as a few years ago, when you pressed a button on a household appliance, it would make it do something

but today — through the miracle of progress!! — the appliance can simply… ignore you.

why? it won’t say!

press & pray you are judged worthy
if artificial intelligence can feel pain i’m gonna need to put some in my thermostat so i can shock it when it decides to ignore my settings and just tells me it’s “waiting”

This thread. Once you see an estranged parent in action you start to notice that behavior all over the place, about any relationship, full of possessive rage about being unable to threaten someone back to being a passive object.
You gotta put estranged parents brain in some central part of your analysis of the fascist turn if it isn't there already

I'm doing an on-camera interview with a student about AI and writing next week & would like to prepare!

Particularly interested in studies I can cite off the cuff and look super smart--the more reputable the journal the better (I know Nature and Science have done things!)

Imagine how fucking rotted a person's brain has to be to submit a 50,000 line pull request and not perceive that what you are doing is *incredibly* embarrassing and antisocial.

A vibecoder can no longer notice they're greeting people by spraying hot dogshit all over the place.
I like seeing the dev of the SNES core on the Pocket actually telling one of these dudes off. Holy shit.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!"

Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

I’ve said this before, but it’s sort of insane that no British political party is willing to champion Games Workshop, one of the country’s most successful, British born and run companies, and would much rather simp for Palantir or OpenAI

AI (llm) detection tools that use AI (llm) are bullshit. Because AI (llm) is bullshit.

It's the lady who swallowed a fly. Do you not get that?

This last line is my new mantra
Dialogue does not change minds, and punishment does not change people.

But the risk of catching a beating adds an extra cost to being an asshole that a lot of people are not willing to pay.

We get side-tracked into wanting people to think right when the task is to get them to act right.

I still think about the conversation I had with an uber driver
Him: so what do you do
Me: I’m a video game writer
Him: wait, video games? They have writing? What do you write?
Me: you know when you open up a game and you see the words?
Him: yeah?
Me: those
The funniest/saddest reaction to this amazing article has been people going "wait, Stellaris has WRITERS?"

Yes folks, if a game has words... someone probably got paid to write them... even if that game isn't an RPG or a visual novel...

You can and likely will become disabled. Every single person you love can and likely will become disabled. It can happen at any time: car wreck, step off the curb wrong, body stops handling flu well.

You should care about how disabled people are treated. Now.
disability rights (or the lack of them) will be your rights one day. and yes, I say this to absolutely scare you into thinking about disability. What rights will you want? Think about that.

To expand on this: Bigotry isn't a result of an innocent misunderstanding, or not having all the facts. It's not a choice made rationally, defeated with a rational argument.

Bigotry is a self-protective, foundational belief used to help make the world make sense to them. Debate won't change that.
We’ve been hearing for 20 years plus how we should just sit down and have a meal with people who think black, Latino and LGBTQ people are subhumans who must be killed. No.
