European Organisation for the Rescue of Lives at Sea. Updates from our Search and Rescue operations in the Central Mediterranean #OceanViking #TogetherForRescue
⚫13 years ago, a shipwreck off Lampedusa claimed the lives of more than 368 people.

It became a defining moment in Europe’s recent history, exposing the consequences of deterrence policies & human cost of inaction.

13 years later, we remember those who never reached shore and honour their memory.

No one should be left to drown at sea. And rescuers should not be threatened.

We stand in solidarity with the RNLI, its crews and volunteers.

Last night, 75 people, including 39 minors and 9 women, disembarked in Salerno after being rescued by the #OceanViking. Our teams had rescued 78 people in total. The previous day, a two-day-old newborn was medically evacuated with their mother and sister.

🔵 UPDATE: A mother, her daughter, and her newborn baby were medically evacuated with the support of an Italian Coast Guard patrol vessel to receive medical care on land.

The other survivors are still receiving care on board the #OceanViking as it sails towards Salerno.

In Malta's Search and Rescue Region, "rescue" stands for ignorance. Most people who risk drowning here don't get saved - they get kidnapped by Libyan militias and disappear. Yesterday, Seabird 3 spotted a boat with 17 people in distress, and everyone knew what would come next.

Yesterday, following the three rescue operations that took place within 5 hours, Italian authorities assigned Salerno, two days of navigation away, as a Place of Safety.
September 9, 2026 at 9:52 AM
Today, our team aboard the #OceanViking carried out 3 rescues of 17, 16 and 45 people in the Maltese SRR. Among the survivors are 12 women, a two-day-old baby and a five-month-old baby. All had heat exhaustion; some also had dehydration and fuel burns.

The reduction in arrivals highlighted by the Meloni Government has not translated into fewer deaths at sea. On the contrary, the data show that crossing the Mediterranean has become increasingly deadly.

🔴 Shots fired & people in the water. The so-called Libyan coastguard, backed by the EU, opened fire toward NGO ship Louise Michel - instead of recovering the two people who had gone overboard.
August 27, 2026 at 12:55 PM
This week, Libyan Coast Guards fired shots in the vicinity of #LouiseMichel and threatened to shoot #Aurora.

1 year after the shooting of the #OceanViking, these events illustrate what we warned about: continued funding by EU & absence of accountability fostering impunity with deadly consequences.
The so-called Libyan coastguard fired two shots towards the Louise Michel.

Late yesterday afternoon, our crew became aware of a boat in distress.

Alongside the Louise Michel, the so-called Libyan coastguard (scLcG) also arrived and began an interception operation, an illegal pushback.

One year ago, our rescue vessel Ocean Viking came under heavy fire from the Libyan Coast Guard vessel Houn 664 while carrying 87 people we had been rescued at sea.

A year later, no one has been held accountable.

The 55 women, men & children rescued by the #OceanViking have finally reached safety in #Ortona this afternoon.

Many endured horrific violence and unimaginable hardship in their countries of origin and along their journeys before facing the dangers of the Central Mediterranean.

Yesterday saw a remarkable demonstration of solidarity and commitment to maritime law.
Through cooperation between a humanitarian aircraft, a merchant vessel and the Italian MRCC, around 68 people aboard two boats in distress were brought to safety.

This morning the #OceanViking rescued 55 people, including 8 women and 9 children, from an overcrowded rubber boat in distress in the Maltese SRR following a Mayday relay from a Frontex aircraft. They spent 3 days at sea. Most are from war-torn #Sudan. Our crew is caring for them

11 lives lost.

Today, during a monitoring flight over the Central Mediterranean, the crew of Albatross, the joint aerial monitoring aircraft operated by SOS MEDITERRANEE and @HPISwiss, witnessed a devastating scene.

Today, the 15 people rescued on 11/08 arrived safely in #Civitavecchia. We wish them all the best!

While the #EU continues to build walls that force people onto unsafe sea routes, @sosmediterranee.org will be there to render assistance at sea and uphold international maritime law.

While many people continue to flee wars and violence, we are back in the skies over the Central Mediterranean.

Together with @hpiswiss.bsky.social, we monitor one of the world's deadliest migration routes, where human rights violations and breaches of international maritime law continue to occur.

This evening, the #OceanViking rescued 15 people, including an unaccompanied minor, after spotting their fibreglass boat in distress from the bridge, within the Maltese SRR.

They had departed at around 3 am and had spent hours exposed to intense heat before being rescued.

"There is a battle on how migration is talked about because the words we use are influenced by the way in which people understand migration, and then who they empathise with, and which policies then they are willing to accept."

The #OceanViking has disembarked 14 survivors in Brindisi. They were rescued four days ago from a small, flimsy, three-metre-long rubber boat in international waters.
Among them was a seven-year-old girl who told us she could not wait to go to school.
August 3, 2026 at 3:09 PM
The Italian authorities have indicated #Brindisi as a Place of Safety to disembark the 14 survivors on board #OceanViking. They had initially sent the ship to #Ancona.

This morning, crew members on the #OceanViking have rescued 14 people, including 3 women and a 7 year old girl from a small rubber boat in distress in international waters in the Libyan Search & Rescue Region.

On this #WorldDayAgainstTraffickinginPersons, we underline that policies of deterrence are making routes more costly and dangerous, forcing people into the hands of exploitative networks that they are forced to rely on, as long as there are no safe alternatives.
