Trick or treat!
#halloween #art
Digital drawing made to look like a black and white ink drawing. A large, four-armed, cloaked creature with a deer skull for a head emerges from between gnarled trees to hand a fun-size candy bar to three trick-or-treating children dressed as a witch, a ghost, and a pumpkin.

Skjalg and Rufus from Dyreparken's Villmarkens Forbannelse
#SkjalgEnterprises #VillmarkensForbannelse #art
Digital drawing of Skjalg the mad scientist from Villmarkens Forbannelse. His incisors are fangs and his face is mutated, loosely resembling a vampire bat. He's wearing goggles, a lab coat, an old-timey leather apron, and gloves. He's smiling and looking at the viewer, holding a bone saw in one hand and reaching toward the viewer with the other. In the shadows, Rufus, his part-rat assistant, is holding a tray with supplies. Across the bottom of the image is the blurred shape of a gag, as though you're the one gagged and tied to the operating table.

One of the challenges of drawing fanart of mad scientist characters is that they usually aren't too specific about the science. You're kinda forced to stick to syringes, test tubes, an Erlenmeyer flask containing a green liquid, and a cage of not-quite-rats instead of anything realistic.

Figuring out how to draw Skjalg the mad scientist from Dyreparken's Villmarkens Forbannelse
Three bust sketches and one small full body sketch of Skjalg, a mad scientist with the nose and incisors of a vampire bat who wears a lab coat, a leather apron, and goggles on top of his head.

Have you all heard about Dyreparken's "Scary Days" Halloween events. Namely, Villmarkens forbannelse. It's made up primarily of original characters and I've spent the past few days obsessed with them and their lore.

Nothing got done last night because I ended up watching a bunch of The Hatters' music videos again and learned that they collaborated with an alt rock band. I love the accordion player rocking out.

"In the Ancient Hallowed Places"
Ovenbird with Six-spotted Tiger Beetle
10"x24" oil painting on panel

The beautiful conglomerate rocks of an ancient sea floor; buried and lifted and revealed and eroded, the life that once was and is again, complex and beautiful and interconnected across time. 🪶🐡
A long format oil painting showing a cropped rock formation of ancient conglomerate, cracked and looming in its current form by water, ice, and time. A wash of moss and lichens crawls across the surfaces that allowed it to grow, with stunted mountain laurel taking root in the mossy nursery, and large brownish rock tripe lichens clinging here and there. A few aged white oak leaves sit in the moss, bug eaten and worn, and near the center sits an Ovenbird, the tiny stripy warbler pausing in its day. On the rock closest to us on the right is a metallic green colored Six-spotted tiger beetle. The artist watermark reads: copyright 2026 Jennifer Miller "Nambroth" featherdust dot com

Cetacea
Digital Drawing. An early whale (Pakicetus) stands at the water's edge, bending down for a drink. Behind it is a wall of tall grasses/reeds. The entire scene is shown within the shape of a blue whale. Despite the vast gulf in form and time between the two animals, they are of the same group: Cetacea.

A little narwhal in the style of a medieval curio, mounted on a panel. Two ideas were overlapping in my mind: Narwhals’ tusks can distinguish changes in water temperature and chemistry; the horns of unicorns purify water and detect poison. 🦄

A photo of a small narwhal sculpture on a patterned board. The narwhal is made from white clay and coloured to resemble ivory. The piece rests on a wooden table next to a penny, for scale.

I've been seized with an urge to draw barnacle geese after seeing The Wild Robot (which I enjoyed very much), and remembered that I drew this in 2014 after seeing a documentary about how barnacle goslings have to simply hurl themselves off their cliff nests to join their parents at ground level.
Single-panel comic drawn in black ink of a pair of barnacle goose parents at the bottom of a cliff, regarding their dazed and confused gosling, who looks up at them with a plaintive 'why??'

Rosa (and Langemann) during a Kaptein Sabeltann daytime show at Dyreparken, July 18, 2026
#photography #KapteinSabeltann #pirate
An actress playing Rosa, a woman with curly brown hair wearing puffy sleeves, a red corset, and trousers, smiling while sheathing a sword in front of a crowd. The pirate ship's rigging is behind her. Just visible through the crowd a man in a three-point hat playing Langemann smiles too.

Night eyes 😎 Finally got proper pictures of this amazing phenomenon! Mantises change their eye color (and light sensitivity) at night by transporting pigments from the surface of each compound eye unit toward the deeper eye region. Same female Tenodera sinensis, two different times. #bugsky
A female Tenodera sinensis mantis with dark black eyes against a light background, seen from very close up. A female Tenodera sinensis mantis with green/brown eyes against a light background, seen from very close up to show the details of her face. The pseudopupil is clearly visible on her left eye, facing the camera.

Well, this ended up more of an experiment with media than anything else, but to be fair, that was what I intended when I started. I don't know how I feel about the finished result as a whole, but I like a lot of the textures, and I learned a little more about what works for me and what doesn't.
A watercolor and ink painting of a barn owl with starry patterning on its neck and down the center of its face. The owl sits nestled in a dead tree, looking directly at the viewer. Five other larger star designs are positioned around the owl and its tree.

Season 1 of the Norwegian show I'm watching rn doesn't appear to be officially available on any streaming services or physical media. I managed to find the first 2 episodes, and the rest? Exclusively dubbed in Russian. It's been uploaded so many times in Russian.
