Mia // she/her - they/them The universe cascades in the space between my synapses.
I forgot how excellent an album My Aim Is True is. My respect for Messrs. Bruce and Pete is immense (see the Live Stiffs "Miracle Man" and Side 1 of Armed Forces) but I think this remains my favorite EC record and maybe my favorite New Wave record (w apologies to the Specials, Blondie, Joe Jackson)

Having my day job be completely uncaring towards my experience as a neurodivergent disabled person is profoundly physically painful, emotionally distressing and morally crushing.

At least I have a wonderful personal mental health support system and CD box sets, TV and comic books to keep me going.

I'm delighted by the mentions of Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdinck, Barbara Windsor and Frankie Howerd in the recent Bee Gees bonus from @andrewhickey.500songs.com

Refreshing to have someone validate that more genial, entertaining and older audience art has real value.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com spotted a familiar name quoted in the Shadows book with a colourful description of Royston Ellis. Fantastic stuff, this. I love the kaleidoscopic writing style. Ropes in Cat Stevens, David Hockney, Angus McBean, Bert Weedon, Pet Clark, Adam Faith, Anthony Newley. (1/2)

@andrewhickey.500songs.com learning the Shadows are the same generation and indeed almost the same ages as the Beatles is *blowing my mind*. You mean the guys doing boxsteps backing Cliff on "Summer Holiday" were contemporaries with The Coolest People Alive what made Revolver?? Preposterous.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com any chance of "Cowman Milk Your Cow" in the bonus?

Also, your episodes on Cliff and the Shadows are one of the things helping me through a tough time right now, so thanks for those.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com the Bob Stanley Bee Gees biog is the first book I've actually finished in a little bit. His writing and yours share a quality I really appreciate: you can make a song, album or artist I ordinarily wouldn't think twice about seem the coolest or most interesting thing ever

@andrewhickey.500songs.com spinning that Clapton/Gibb P.P. Arnold album and it's really great -- really appreciating the Gibbs as songwriters for other artists as I'm deep in the Stanley book - Barbra, Dionne, et al

And now that I'm on a Bee Gees kick I hear them and their productions *everywhere*!

@andrewhickey.500songs.com looking forward to a possible excerpt of "Meaningless Songs (in Very High Voices)" in the bonus... (1/4)

@andrewhickey.500songs.com fascinating side road from Richard Perry's first group the Escorts: shortly after they formed they asked a young singer called Goldie (a Hungarian Holocaust survivor) to join them and had a regional #1 (1/7):

@andrewhickey.500songs.com wow, Richard Perry co-produced Safe As Milk? No wonder it's such a good record.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com am listening to the Banana Splits bonus and got to the bit about that Gene Pitney-written track and hadn't heard of the "more famous song of the same name", and thus had to pause and watch Tessie O'Shea tear it up on the banjo...neat! :)

We’re going to hear about how everyone loved Dolly, and that feels true. But it’s good to remember, and to her credit, that she was attacked for her AIDS activism, her vaccine advocacy, her LGBTQ+ support and even, more recently, for her reading initiatives. She ALWAYS stood firm when it mattered.

I spent a long time reporting on people w wealth & fame & protections they bring. often the excuse was "But I was injured in *these* ways." You don't think a poor child growing up in the South, a woman in country music, knew fear, want, rejection?

Did she use that as an excuse to hurt & hoard? NO.

you can build a bunker for you and your retainers & you can hoard your power & fame, you can worship nothing but ambition or status and stand by while people you might be able to help--in big ways or small ways--go without.

Or you can be Dolly.

All these things are choices. She made good ones.

I'm sure she got advice on her image, on how it might be better to reject her LGBTQ audience. She didn't. She knew what it was to be powerless & poor & she didn't want *anyone* to live that way. A lesson for people w aspirations to public life: Hurting others doesn't have to be part of the equation.

every billionaire & tech mogul, they all want to be adored & celebrated without doing the things Dolly did with a fraction of the power & money. What she had, she gave away. I'm sure she was comfortable (& that's good!). But she just relentlessly helped. It's not that difficult. Love. Care. Help. 💚🌸

@andrewhickey.500songs.com that thing you talk about with remixes is a thing in jazz too -- I'm fairly sure the most readily available version of Kind Of Blue in stereo is a 1996-7 remaster of a 1992 remix, and the most readily available mono version is a remix from 2013. The mind boggles.

Still working my way through this (on Episode Three) but Sophie and Norah's conversation about the former being "sorry for existing" hit like a truck, and Bums is a delight. Cheers to @sararoseg.bsky.social, @andrewhickey.500songs.com and team on a truly titanic achievement :)
