Sister. Nerd. Teacher. Sometimes writer.
One of my students is loving “The Hobbit” so much they decided to be Gandalf for Halloween.

Never ever ever EVER tell me that my students can’t enjoy age-appropriate literature, even if they need the language simplified to understand it.

This is a great analysis of the finale. I’ve seen some complaints that it didn’t feel big enough to be a finale but I for one loved that we ended the season like this, with a quiet, loving look at the *people*. No potential world-ending. No universe-wide peril.
I have been thinking about Uhura.

“Tomorrow’s Enterprise” gave us two Uhuras, Spock math, a space baby, and Celia Rose Gooding standing a little closer to the legacy Nichelle Nichols gave us.

Naturally, I wrote about it. ☕️🖖

Me, thinking: okay, I think I’m doing a decent job not letting on that my hips to my left knee are on sciatica-fire.

Also me: *twists slightly the wrong way*

No less than three students: ARE YOU OKAY MISS REDACTED?!

(I’m actually significantly better than yesterday but the concern was cute.)

Please note that I wrote this entire thread without my reading glasses and laying in the weird but only currently comfortable position I can because I am Ow My Sciatica years old, so please pardon any typos or autocorrect nonsense that I didn’t see well enough to fix.
Been thinking all day about how to commemorate ENT’s 25th anniversary. I’ve told this story before, but Star Trek was The Thing my dad and I shared. He introduced me to it around 1983 when I was 5 and he set me in front of “The Trouble With Tribbles.” When TNG premiered about 4 years later,

I mean, you do eventually get to a point where you think, “What the heck; if it’s not gonna stay inside anyway I might as well eat something that tastes good” but that could be the result of two extended “stays” on the BRAT diet as a kid…still can’t eat plain white rice to this day.
Outsmarting the norovirus by returning to my dietary habits immediately and feeling like shit forever

There are lots of things about being middle aged that I don’t actually mind and I’m even kind of looking forward to menopause.

But I really don’t like being Ow My Sciatica years old. 😑

Or, and hear me out here, we make birch beer available** on the west coast since that actually, you know, tastes good?

** Very, VERY occasionally you will find a random bottle of Boylan’s but never the sweet sweet nectar of the gods that is Kutztown.

Y’all there is a GANDALF SQISHMALLOW that I am going to have to buy for my classroom, given that we are currently reading (a simplified version of) “The Hobbit.”

Just heard of the passing of James Sloyan. He played so many memorable roles in 90s Trek, including Jarok (TNG's The Defector), Dr. Mora Pol (Odo's "dad"), future Alexander Rozhenko, and Jetrel (from Voyager). Such a powerful performer. He will be missed, but he has left a lasting legacy. 🖖

You are telling me that I spent my whole childhood eating boxed nonsense and then 20 more years just not eating au gratin potatoes when I could have been eating THIS deliciousness?! The prep took maybe 10 minutes, including making the sauce.
I spent my entire childhood eating au gratin potatoes from a box and you’re telling me it’s just basically thinly sliced potatoes in a bechamel cheese sauce??

(There’s a reason I started cooking for the family after my dad and his - one might say - rigid food fascinations passed away.)

It’s interesting to see how people react to all the…I’m gonna say genre-expansive…episodes this season.

I have just realized via another post that not only was he Q, he was Lord Kiro! As in “the Shadows have come for Lord Kiro…the Shadows have come for us all!” Lord Kiro.
He was memorable in so many movies and TV shows. He even played Q on Star Trek! The Q who rebelled and wanted to become mortal. Also TIL... HE WROTE SONGS FOR THE GRATEFUL DEAD. RIP Gerrit Graham. May everyone know your name as well as your work.
Whenever Gerrit Graham showed up in anything, you knew you were in for a good time. RIP legend and thank you for all the memories.

I’m gonna need there to Thomas Riker style transporter shenanigans so that La’An can actually have her happily ever after with one James T. Kirk.

“They build me again; I should open the way
But I tasted brief freedom and died
Though I sang o’er their deserts and sang in their hearts
Another was to take my place
And my unclaimed commander remained planetside
And we’ve not yet together touched space”

“In this galaxy, there’s a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And in all the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all of that, and perhaps more, only one of each of us.”
For your Tuesday, here's a shot of deep, deep, deep space from JWST.

Every bright, six-pointed feature is a star in the Milky Way.

Everything else—even the smallest, faintest dots—are whole galaxies millions to *billions* of lightyears away.

So my school had a book fair this week. I posted in my weekly newsletter on Friday that my class’s chance to visit was today, but that I was only going to send the kids with money because the others don’t understand why they can’t get anything.

A parent donated $10 per kid so they could all go.

This nurse withheld oxygen from a dying patient to save herself paperwork.

This is why disabled people are angry.

This is why we scream about eugenics and that our lives aren’t valued.

Even in our final days or hours, those meant to care for us don’t care at all.

I’m so glad.

First of all, because she was amazing the whole season but *especially* the moment here with Zosia.

Second of all: because she played a woman who was allowed to be angry that she was in a truly sucky situation.
Rhea Seehorn has won her first-ever Emmy.
