I have three novels to write, all different styles, and I'm worried they bleed into each other, as would whatever I'm reading - but none of them are SF, so I'm going to read the EDAs from the start, as a palette cleanser as I go along.

First up - the 8 Docs, which I remember as being shite.
Bittersweet post from @fruitsdemerrecords.bsky.social - a promo cd of the new Sendelica album, the last with Pete Bingham after his untimely death.

Just listened to it and it's a fitting tribute to a great guitarist, from the jazzy opening track to the glorious spaced out mellowness of the closer.

I know the tiny audience I have here is mainly for Doctor Who work I did years ago, but @gailsimone.bsky.social checked out the original series I'm co-writin' now with Laurie Foster and digs it! So maybe give it a look, huh? www.kickstarter.com/projects/lag...

I often think Question Time has become irrelevant, what with Fiona Bruce and the BBC’s apparent belief that it exists primarily to platform Reform.

Then I see something like Suella Braverman’s racist car crash last night and I wonder - is it just a cunning ‘give em enough rope’ sort of thing?

The Peter Principle in action.

The problem is that we value management over work and pay accordingly. People who care about the work are overseen by people who care about the pay.

Middle management today is a series of bad decisions made by people who have little understanding of the job and an overwhelming need to overrule people that are willing (often with genuine care for the quality of service) to explain why those decisions are bad.

Public anger comes for John Roberts

The chief justice’s summer retreat in Maine used to be one of boating, potluck dinners, touch football and easy friendships. Locals called him “John.”

Now a swirl of anger has been rising at him, transforming his getaways. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/01/u...

After decades of potlucks and paddle-boarding on Maine’s midcoast, rising anger and protests have left the Supreme Court’s chief justice more isolated than ever.

The correct answer is 'yes'.

This is the most remarkable story Ray Bradbury ever shared with me. He told it to me late one night, sitting in his den of antiquities and mementos. Take five minutes to read this. It’s pure magic.

look, if you're worried about being remembered, don't try to pursue immortality or whatever, the smart move is to start selling substandard copper and then make sure anyone who complains deposits a physical copy of that complaint in a site that will later be archaeologically significant
The thing about the florid apocalypticism you sometimes encounter on this site is that a lot of people are less horrified by literal civilizational collapse than by the notion that our descendents are just going to keep muddling through and in less than a century nobody will remember us.

And I get the same vibe from AI proponents; They simply don't understand art, and think it's beneath them.

They don't understand the appeal, they come from a techbro mindset and think art is a solved equation and anything that isn't photorealistic or extremely high detail is failing at the goal.

Famously, when Doctor Who finally got a Disney budget for VFX it produced the most successful and popular series of its 62 year run.

Afternoon listening - this and its two companion volumes of hard bop from the post war era in Britain is the reason cds were invented. Done on vinyl this would be a £100 box set, done on cd it's twenty quid or so the lot.
