Are you inspired to make your neighbourhood safer for kids? To add greenspace? To build community? You may want to launch an open street!

School pick-up and drop-off zones have pollution levels above rec. daily limits.

But we can change that: with anti-idling campaigns, school active travel plans, participating in a walk-or bike-bus, or seeing if a "school street" works in your neighbourhood.

From @sustainableyyc.bsky.social and me!

Over the past 20 years, the replacement cost of city infrastructure has been increasing at a rate that outpaces the GDP of the Calgary Region, imposing on each Calgarian an increasing tax liability into the future.

The relationships between mental health and sustainability are reinforcing: lack of public space, poverty, pollution, and social inequalities can worsen mental health, while good mental health helps us tackle economic, environmental, educational, and political challenges for a better future.

Just as food costs are rising, so are food insecurity rates in #yyc. These numbers are supported by a 2025 report from Dalhousie University that found 80.6% of survey participants reported food was the necessity that saw the greatest cost increase over the past 12 months.

You'd probably guess that the ecological footprint of the average Calgarian remains well beyond the global average. But do you know to what scale?

For the first time in 30 years of State of Our City reports, the Community domain is moving in the wrong direction, reflected in indicators like volunteerism.

Big credit to Mayor Cam Guthrie (@camguthrie.bsky.social) of Guelph, Ontario for using strong mayor powers to reinstate funding for winter clearing of the city’s bike network!

Snow clearing is the essential factor, without which people can’t even consider biking in the winter.

I've always wanted to dress up my bike for halloween but then I wonder what I will do with it because my kids are too old to want to let me tag along for trick or treating, and maybe this is the answer

Here we are just trying to get school streets to get piloted in Calgary. @sustainableyyc.bsky.social @calgary.ca
👏👏👏 Paris built 115 school streets in a year. ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN.

😳😳😳 Edinburgh built one school street 5 years ago, and it remains dilapidated and temporary to this day
Back to school is coming fast!

In #Paris, they have la rentrée sorted.

There are 300 "rue aux écoles," streets closed to cars, but open to people—up from 185 last year.

That means *half* of kindergartens + elementary schools now have school streets.

What's your city doing to keep kids safe?

Reimagining our city starts with bold ideas, and sometimes, those ideas come from 9-year-olds. 🌱 The Connaught Open Street, a pop-up park beside a Calgary elementary school, started as an idea from a group of fourth graders. Now it’s permanent.
