I will never understand why so many universities effectively punish trainees for winning funding. At UMD, F32s come with: 1) a small pay cut (unless PI has non-grant funds to supplement), 2) loss of retirement benefits & employee health insurance, 3) quarterly, non-tax withheld salary payments
UC Davis will no longer pay the difference so that GRFP recipients earn the same as other students. So mid-PhD students will lose nearly 25% of salary & new students will make less than their peers.
Apply for the GRFP, it’s a wonderful help to your career. Just don’t come here if you get one.
