Pulling this out of a discussion because there's something to this which not everyone sees and I'd like to pick apart.
Now, I recognize that I myself am making what to you may seem like a false choice (and currently I drive a car which can be connected to the internet, so pot meet kettle).
But at this point, I view connectivity as a trade-off. And since it doesn't provide value to me, I'd rather not have it at all.

As the opposite of a computer toucher, I sometimes worry that I'm not keeping up with the development of things.
Luckily, I'm smart enough to realize that if the "most dangerous" LLMs need warehouses full of GPUs to function, they can't just "break out" and start running on random PCs.

Gonna go out on a limb and suggest the loudest voices in the tech industry have very little grasp of the variety and complexity of the world outside their own industry, with a side dish of not understanding that to most people step one in furniture shopping is not "buy a CNC router and lathe"

Politics-watchers have long been exasperated by those with leverage to make things better but who refuse to use that leverage, but my read has been the general public hasn't picked up on this particular problem.

I know this'll ruffle feathers but I agree with this Food/Water watch analysis. Diverting renewable energy away from fossil phase-out and climate adaptation and towards melting graphics card to power chatbots is the formal end of moral purpose for clean technology.

I realized recently that, though I didn't understand it at the time, a large reason I chose to go into the hotel business as a career was that hospitality is honest work.
And part of me wonders if society feels like it's cracking because we're being told this isn't important anymore.

I was young enough that my memories are vague, so a lot of this had to be recontextualized as I got older but yes.
Definitely remember the "support our troops" ribbons being fucking everywhere. I was too young to understand the gravity of it but everyone was going along.

People may not realize it when they demand this feature, but what they're saying is "I will not buy a car which requires an ongoing subscription to remain fully functional" and it is a good sign GM may be responding to that.

Yup. Either politicians do not believe they can successfully convince their constituents to trust their increased tax burden will be more than offset by decreases in other costs like, say private health insurance premiums, or they simply do not want to make that argument.

If I may get on my soap box: No Kings is a tactic. It is not the strategy and no one involved in putting it on considers it sufficient on its own. It's a mass show of defiance that's also served as an onramp to the kind of local organizing work that's necessary to shift power
I see on-the-ground evidence *on a daily basis* of how people's involvement in No Kings, Indivisible, 50501 has grown into ICE monitoring, flock camera protests, city council blowups over data centers and running for office. THAT was the point of No Kings, all along, from my perspective.
