A $73 million effort aims to create shelf-stable versions of plasma, platelets, and red blood cells. The idea is to develop dried blood products that can be stored for long periods and deployed quickly on the battlefield.

A California dairy is using hundreds of thousands of earthworms buried in wood-chip beds to filter manure wastewater, dramatically cutting nitrogen pollution and odors. The low-tech approach costs far less for farms than some high-tech alternatives and is quietly spreading across the state.
