Anybody reading this? Because… I have feelings… and questions… and fears…Like… is this actually the zeitgeist?

Friends, the Booker Prize is reliable…but I downloaded and read the “free sample” of Flesh,
and IDK. Have y’all read it? WDYT?

If all legal ballots were counted; tRump would have lost Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania & Wisconsin. Kamala would have won Presidency with 286 electoral votes. Harris would have gained 3.565+M votes, topping tRump’s popular vote tally by 1.2M.

I miraculously got the audiobook, which McCann himself reads (beautifully), from the library the day it was released. After about two chapters, I ordered a hard copy. I’m listening to the audio again, and I’m dying to talk about it. Anybody else?

Finishing the #AlphabetTitleChallenge with an absolute banger. Zealot by Reza Aslan is an easy-to-read & well-researched narrative of the historical Jesus. It’s fascinating not only because of Jesus, but also because of his contemporaries. 1st C BCE was truly a world-changing moment 📚🖋️📚💙📚

If you follow me you’re prbly sick of me raving abt how much I LOVE this book. But it’s SO GOOD. Postmodern story of Spanish conquistadores in Moctezuma’s empire. I❤️it so much I immediately got the audiobook, and the reader is fantastic. READ IT-you won’t regret it!

Failing the #AlphabetTitleChallenge again today. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that starts with “X.” Watcha got #booksky ? 📚🖋️📚💙📚

Nearing the end of the #AlphabetTitleChallenge
White Teeth by Zadie Smith is complex & thrilling. It’s a coming-of-age novel as well as a growing middle-aged novel. It’s smart & funny and worth a read AND a re-read

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan offers a tantalizing world full of possibilities…but failure is among them, and time passes. I just read it again recently before reading The Candy House, a (kind of) sequel. Still rocks 🔥

The only nonfiction pick in my #AlphabetTitleChallenge Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer reads like a novel. A murder thriller is interwoven with a fascinating exploration of the LDS church. It’s 25 years old, but it’s still relevant, gritty & fascinating 📚💙📚🖋️📚

A bit unconventional for today’s #AlphabetTitleChallenge
The Throwback Special by Chris Bachelder has no main character & not much of a plot. It’s a total “guy” book. In fact, I think the conflict is … being a guy? It’s utterly charming & includes amazing, perfect metaphors.

Today’s #AlphabetTitleChallenge was a tough choice but I’m going with Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward. Every single word, image, moment, EVERYTHING is precise & exactly right. Beautiful and heartbreaking.

#AlphabetTitleChallenge 💙📚🖋️ Tess Gunty’s first novel won the Nat’l Book Award. It’s SO GOOD. As w/all the best books, Gunty treats her flawed characters w/exactly the right combination of surprise, disdain, empathy & generosity. The end leaves me thinking that cynicism is lazy. We can do better.

Ok #booksky I have failed to come up with a Q for the #AlphabetTitleChallenge. What am I missing? There must be some Queens out there? or some Quicks or Quivers? Maybe a Quaker or a Question? What are your favorite Q titles? 📚🖋️📚💙📚

Prophet Song by Paul Lynch is
chilling. The title suggests Lynch knew exactly what he was doing, and the events of recent weeks underscore the anxiety & uncertainty of the moment.

The Orphan Master’s Son is a literary page-turner. It’s a fascinating exploration about the possibility of being a good person in a bad situation. Must also s/o One Hundred Years of Solitude. It’s well known but the element that is underrated imo is that it’s FUNNY

This book shows what art can be made from language. Every sentence is a beautiful punch in the gut. Read it over & over & over, and lmk if you’re an optimist or a cynic

#AllhabetTitleChallenge 📚🖋️📚💙📚 Ngl I started this one 2-3 times before I got into, but once I did it blew my mind. There’s so much going on and it’s brilliant—a personal and a national/cultural saga in parallel.

Let the Great World Spin is a beautiful book about the ways we’re all connected. Some
of McCann’s sentences are little works of art in themselves. This 2009 Nat’l Book Award winner is truly a masterpiece

Not only is this an excellent & essential re-telling of Jim’s story, it opened up the entire world of Percival Everett for me. Also love The Trees & Erasure AND the film adaptation American Fiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Breaking my own new book rule for this perfect first book. Yes it’s about war & rage-but so much more. Mostly it’s about what it fundamentally means to be human. We all suffer, we all must lose loved ones & our own lives, which makes us more noble than the gods.

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi is a 5⭐️ first novel. It helps us see how the legacy of slavery directly affects us through seven generations both in North America & west Africa. My students love it, and several have persuaded their moms’ book clubs to read it.
