In Alaska's annual battle of the big bears, only one can be the winner. And this year, a brown bear that overcame a life-threatening injury in 2007 was crowned the winner of Katmai National Park and Preserve’s Fat Bear Week. nyti.ms/4rCmk48

Speaking as an English lit major, I find this deeply offensive. Never mind that jobs like Social Work are critical and need to be incentivized, kids should study whatever they want. Studying art doesn’t commit them to a life as an impoverished artist
The Trump administration is banning students studying certain degrees from taking out student loans:

—Social work
—Teaching aides
—Cosmetology
—Culinary arts
—Music
—Art
—English literature
—Film
—Religious studies

Surgery vs Medicine
A hospital bed got a wheel stuck in a service elevator near me. I went to help and a (much more buff) man in scrubs and surgical cap was there too. I bent down to look at the wheel, looking to dislodge it. Meanwhile the other guy lifted the entire bed up and out of the groove

It is barbaric that Americans owe $220 BILLION in medical debt.

In the richest country on Earth, healthcare should be a right—not a debt sentence.

We must *finally* eliminate medical debt and deliver Medicare for All.

Great. So I just imagined those two years that threw me into an existential crisis. What a relief knowing that all that anguish went in to something that wasn’t even real. At least I was doing it for people who didn’t really exist
RFK Jr said these words today on national television

"There were ICUs that were empty all over the country including in New York at the height (of the pandemic)"

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

You are a fucking idiot

@joelanderson.bsky.social I am sure you’ve been barbered since yesterdays POD, but Blood Bros is incredible BBQ with heavy Asian influence in your old stomping grounds (well, Bellaire). Have Van ship it to you and your dad! Won’t regret it, I miss it now I’m no longer in Houston

Apologies to my dear ID colleagues, but if you really want me to be a better steward of antibiotics, you MUST stop giving them such fun names. Honestly, I am powerless against the temptation of ordering Vabomere, Cresemba, or Exblifep.

They should build loads of data centers all over the place that contain huge quantities of books that people can borrow for free if they fill out a form to get a data center card and promise to return the books on time and don’t make too much noise in the data center.

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning
Drowning is not the violent, splashing call for help that most people expect.

Because heaven forbid we just curtail the advancement of AI. Eugenics is the only possible solution. Please shoot every tech bro into the sun
After advancements in gene editing led to the successful treatment of life-threatening health conditions, some tech bros are considering a new application for the controversial science: making super-smart babies to save the world from dangerously capable AI.
Creating baby geniuses to thwart the AI threat? (Yes, really.)
The new wave of Silicon Valley–backed gene-editing startups is straight out of “Brave New World.”

Most formative book of poems I ever read from Frank O’Hara in college. “why I am Not a Painter” particularly resonates
Frank O’Hara, Writer, Poet, Art Critic, born 100 years ago #OnThisDay, in Baltimore

From ‘The Day Lady Died’:

“And I am sweating a lot by now and thinking of
leaning on the john door in the 5 SPOT
while she whispered a song along the keyboard
to Mal Waldron and everyone and I stopped breathing”
