Working on a new feature for @realtimerides.app where you can flip between similar rides. Here's Lincoln on a rainy September day in 2026 vs a sunny day in June 2025.

This is a project I've had in the works for a while now and I figured #WorldCarFreeDay was a good time to share it.

This idea came to me while watching longform lightly edited videos of cars driving around in Asia and I thought this would be cool to do for bike rides around Chicago.
Introducing realtimerides.app. Watch continuous bike rides through the city of Chicago to get a sense of what it's really like to be a cyclist in the city. Covering a number of routes on the north and northwest side, this project seeks to present real conditions riders deal with every season.

one piece of advice i can share as a parent: certain phases can be really tough, but they do pass. around 18 months my son kept demanding that i condemn hasan piker. all day and night too, i was at the end of my rope. now he’s really into fire trucks. it’s always something new

Very interesting to see how boundaries deal with the river where it generally acts as a boundary but in the case of Waters ~25% is on the west side which on one hand reduces any option of neighborhood cut-throughs but on the other forces way more traffic onto Wilson/Montrose.

New: We pieced together dozens of violent incidents from the ICE agents seen in viral videos from Virginia this week.

They've roamed across multiple states, but are most often working in Chicago.

We also verified the identity of Martin Lagunas, the fed who pointed his gun at a woman on Monday:
Chicago ICE team seen threatening drivers has roamed from Illinois to Minnesota to Virginia
A federal agent from Chicago identified by community members as 40-year-old Martin Lagunas was recorded pointing his gun in the face of a Virginia woman on Monday. His team of ICE agents has been docu...

Gonna alter this and add the wrinkle that the first movie is one you've watched recently:

Weapons: Blood Sport
Operation Hail Mary: The Passion of the Christ
Coherence: Stop Making Sense
Sicario: Serpico
Take a movie title, add a colon and another movie's title to make it SOUND like a sequel to the first movie!
I'll go first.
Big Hero 6: The Magnificent Seven
The Black Hole: Event Horizon
Cube: Sphere
Escape Plan: Get Out
The Mummy: Evil Dead
Poltergeist: It Follows
A Quiet Place: Silent Hill

Watching this Sandlot homage all star segment where they have a bunch of kids essentially doing a spontaneous bike bus to the all star game and like yeah I'm glad we all agree that it's an awesome idea, just sucks we don't build our cities to allow for that sort of thing in reality.

City perks: jaunt out to the suburbs involves taking the bus to the brewery near the metra stop, having a quick beer and picking up a 4 pack while waiting for the train and then a quick walk over the highway observing the rush hour gridlock knowing the train is on time and will get you there on time

Having a flashback to that time I tried to enter the trail just north of Superdawg and finding the whole trail was torn-up and deciding to briefly head east on Devon assuming there'd be another entrance. There was not.

As a regular Clybourn commuter, this has me thinking of how pedestrian conflicts could partially be due to the relative rarity of protected lanes? Like, I'm hypervigilant immediately before and after this protected section but it affords me a brief moment to relax and not worry about getting killed.

Typical day biking down Clybourn: I am so mad at the antisocial driver behavior maybe tomorrow I'm going to bring a hammer with me

Today when I saw Rick Bayless literally the day after making his chorizo potato taco recipe: Bike commuting is the best you never know what you'll see!

Stray thought I've been having lately: "I sure wish the president would face consequences for his actions because then it'd be easier to teach my kids that concept"

Really enjoying Rahm Emanuel courtside at this game watching his view constantly get obstructed by the Spurs head coach.

TIL 100 start-to-end album listens is actually a very lofty goal as in the 20(!) years I've been tracking my listening habits only one album has each track with >100 plays. And my typical approach to listening to music is via albums!l, not singles.

Yeah, love how instead anyone can decide they're king of the road. Was driving this past week and a dude in a beamer (wearing driving gloves) decided to pass everyone in the bus lane, travel multiple blocks via alley and when I eventually turned into my alley there he was obstructing the whole thing
Driving in the city should feel like you're actively asking to borrow some space. Because you are. Only on the limited network of boulevards should some space be pre-allocated for you. The rest of the time you should feel like you're borrowing space from all the people outside. Because you are.

Had dinner on this stretch of Clark last night and find it ridiculous that they haven't outright banned car traffic. Every restaurant was packed indoor and out but obnoxiously loud cars and motorcycles would drive by constantly.

Clark Street Outdoor Dining Program Will Return This Summer — But Traffic Lanes Will Stay Open
The city issued a permit to bring the popular dining program back to River North. But unlike past years, the strip will remain open to car traffic.

Funny thing about this is when I'm around unapologetic MAGA people, they constantly drop references to whatever outrage du jour is getting play on Fox and I either fail to recognize what they're talking about OR I do understand the reference forcing me to try and change the subject to something sane
Obama: "What I'm more interested in for Democrats is, do you know how to just talk to regular people like we're not in a college seminar? Can you talk in plain English to folks? And not have a bunch of gobbledygook around it. Just talk like normal people talk. 'The rent is too high.'"
