Science & philosophy. Cognitive bias, fallacies & paradoxes. Scams, cons & pseudoscience. Codes, puzzles & cryptic crosswords. Randomness, determinism, luck, time, fate, coincidences & memories. Absurdism & existentialism.
When you are scammed, miss out on a bargain, or get a parking fine; it's not primarily the actual money loss which causes the anguish and regret – because it's often negligible in terms of one's net worth – it's more the depressing feeling that you're failing at life and are embarrassed

Umbrellas and sunglasses are two items which you should never spend too much money on, because they are very prone to getting lost or broken! #lifehacks

That cognitive bias when you can't get someone out of your head: their name or initials seem to “coincidentally” pop up *everywhere* – on billboards, reg plates, gravestones, even cryptic crossword answers! – like the world is mocking you #unrequitedlove #baadermeinhof #frequencyillusion

Had three devastating things to process within a week – related to health, romance and death. Trying to be philosophical and take a positive: is it better that they've all come concurrently? The headspace flicks between each, giving alleviation to the others in turn. #stoicism

“The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” by The Script is one of the great songs about unrequited love. Incredible emotion and very clever lyrics #TheScript #unrequitedlove

Life and Death. Is there any bigger contrast between two things? Especially our *human awareness* of life versus our non-existence #Death #MementoMori

The decision whether to keep or throw out an item all comes down to the size/worth ratio. The more space something takes up, the greater its usefulness or sentimental value needs to be.

Superb that so many old churches in rural villages are left open when not in use. Allows anyone, irrespective of religiosity, to look around and enjoy a peaceful moment in a beautiful building.

We often ask the futile question “Why me?” when afflicted by something negative. It perhaps implies that a higher power has decided your fate, but the universe works in a whimsical way #luck #randomness

A good friend sadly died a year ago today, aged just 37. Still can't get my head around the fact that he isn't aware that he died and that he's not here anymore. Never experienced this peculiar feeling as strongly before #Death #MementoMori

The glorification of #GavinAndStacey seems a bit excessive but it was an excellent finale episode – never boring and full of humorous quirks. Predictable storyline, but what else could they have done to create a satisfactory conclusion?
