I read The Dream of Scipio, by Iain Pears (2002). Three layered stories of keeping civilizational ruin at bay, from Rome's 5th century collapse, the 14th century Black Plague, and France's surrender in WWII. Love, honor, beauty, and memory weigh heavily, but with compounding and fatal compromises.
