I’m a mental health therapist (LMFT) in Los Angeles trained in CBT, IPT, TripleP and MAP. Sharing tips from my practice to help encourage and self-regulate. #mentalhealth #therapy #therapist #calm #coping
Create at least one habit in the morning that you enjoy - maybe save your favorite podcast for your commute to work, or drink that coffee you love. I have a tea that I can’t get at a coffee shop. Drinking it in the morning is a treat and sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.

Sometimes the belief holding us back was us as children misinterpreting the situation - my mother doesn’t love me/no one can love me vs my mother has an addiction or mental illness and can’t show up for me. Pay attention to your automatic thoughts, write them down and then challenge them.

Feelings are like a dog you are not sure of. If you run to avoid it, it will chase you and become more scary. If you stand quietly still, it will (usually) come up to you, sniff and leave. Avoiding your feelings creates distress. You are stronger than you give yourself credit for.

Do something nice for yourself in the next two hours. It may be giving yourself a break to regroup, going outside to breathe in fresh air, sending a meme to a friend, or my go to, McDonalds Diet Coke. Small things can elevate mood and help decrease stress. You deserve to feel cared for.

Two things can be true. Things can feel overwhelming and they can still be worth doing. Take breaks. Remind yourself of why you are taking on this challenge and what change you want to bring about to keep your motivation going.

You don’t have to do something well to do it.

When it’s hot outside (and inside!) practice‘pause.’ Heat can make everyone irritable. Pause before you make big decisions, pause before you reply to that annoying text, pause before you validate negative thoughts about yourself. Preserve your energy and your sanity.

I am so sick of girls getting diagnosed with depression and anxiety and their ADHD symptoms are discounted. Therapists and psychiatrists waste client’s time with incomplete or incorrect diagnosis- this is time that clients can’t get back, especially when children are misdiagnosed. 😤

I love explore.org for a mental health relaxation and reset. It’s a feed of different wildlife cameras from orcas to eagles to lions. bsky.app/profile/expl...

ADHD can be frequently misdiagnosed because symptoms overlap with trauma, bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety. Your therapist should always be regularly checking on symptoms and should reassess as needed. For example, as anxiety decreases so can motivation for clients with ADHD.

For working on positive self-image - Take a moment to think of 3 things you like about yourself - write them down and put in your pocket. Choose a reminder to read your list - maybe every time you take a drink of water or every hour on the hour. Create a new list each day and repeat.

I don’t know why psychology keeps using migraine as a condition that can be ‘cured’ by therapy but I suspect it’s poorly medically understood and that women are 3 times more likely to be diagnosed with migraine. 🙄

Negative thoughts about yourself can influence how you interact with others. Retrain your brain - pick one thing you really like about yourself and write it down. When a critical thought about you pops up, say the thing you like about yourself- aloud or silently - and repeat.

Definitions of words have power, for example, to forgive can mean to let go of a debt. I like this concept because it doesn’t mean you forget or condone the action, it means you stop trying to claim the debt - could be what you lost or what was damaged because of someone’s actions.

Staying neutral - neutral facial expression and voice tone, is an effective way to deal with someone who is emotionally disregulated. The less energy you give them, the more tiring it becomes to stay at their same level of agitation.

Happy new year! Why not create some action steps to go with that resolution? You are more likely to make a change if you create a realistic plan.

No one can change the past but we can do the best we can with today. Some days that might be taking a break to eat lunch, other days it might be starting something new.

Mean what you say. Say what you mean. And don’t say it mean is a saying I love. You can communicate when you don’t like something someone said or did so it doesn’t build up into a resentment.
