But they don’t stay in Detroit very long. Soon, they’re expanding to Atlanta, St. Louis, Miami, and California, with each new city bringing its own unique set of problems. Think cops, rival gangs, and two brothers who just aren’t on the same page. Terry wants to try his hand at being legitimate, while Demetrius dreams of how big the empire could get. That dynamic is the heartbeat of the show, and over four seasons their relationship gets shakier and shakier. BMF September 26, 2021 The drug trafficking drama is inspired by the true story of two brothers who rose from the decaying streets of southwest Detroit in the late 1980s and gave birth to one of the most influential crime families in the country. Evie (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Pete (Alfred Enoch) move next to Danny (Sam Heughan) and Becka (Jessica De Gouw), a couple with an open marriage, and things get messy when they start hanging out. Expect jealousy, obsession, secrets… and eventually violence. Now don’t get too attached to these characters because Season 2 resets much of the cast. But you can still expect a similar story. And if you like your psychological thrillers a little pulpy, a little sexy, a little over the top, and a lot of fun, check it out. Oh, and it’s a short binge at just six episodes per season, so it won’t wear out its welcome! The Couple Next Door November 27, 2023 Evie and Pete move into an upscale neighborhood and find themselves in a world of curtain twitching and status anxiety. They find friendship in the shape of the couple next door, alpha traffic cop Danny and his wife, glamorous yoga instructor Becka, but after Danny and Evie share a passionate night together there is trouble ahead. Best darkly funny binge: ‘Sweetpea ’ What happens when you snap… and find out you kind of love murder? Rhiannon Lewis finds out in “Sweetpea .” Ella Purnell plays the lead here, as a woman who’s been dismissed and bullied her whole life and finally loses it. Except she’s also bad at killing. She panics regularly, improvises way too much, and then comes up with a bunch of justifications for why what she’s doing isn’t horrible. All the while keeping things darkly funny along the way. What’s interesting here is how it can swing you back and forth morally in terms of who you’re cheering for. At first you’re kind of on Rhiannon’s side when you find out how badly she’s been bullied. But when that bully, Julia (Nicôle Lecky), turns up again and eventually gives her side of the story, you kind of swing the other way. Then, there’s AJ (Calam Lynch), who offers the possibility of something a little more normal. And just to keep the tension high, there’s Detective Marina (Leah Harvey), who keeps inching closer. With only a single season and just six episodes, this one’s worth tearing through. Sweetpea October 10, 2024 Rhiannon Lewis doesn’t make much of an impression - people walk past her in the street without a second glance. That is until she is pushed over the edge and loses control. Rhiannon’s life transforms, but can she keep her killer secret? Best psychological mystery binge: ‘Dublin Murders ’ Every great detective case actually begins with a previous case the detective couldn’t solve. It’s a formula as old as time, and it exists because it works. So it is with “Dublin Murders .” Rob Reilly (Killian Scott) and Cassie Maddox (Sarah Greene) are assigned to the murder of a young girl found in the woods outside Dublin. The problem? Rob secretly grew up nearby as Adam Ryan, and years earlier he went into those same woods with two friends who were never seen again. Rob was the only kid who came back, and he still can’t remember what happened. BOOM, there’s your real mystery underneath the plot mystery. Then a second murder pulls Cassie into her own bizarre connection to a victim. A dead woman looks almost exactly like her and has been living under “Lexie Madison,” an identity Cassie once invented while working undercover. Cassie goes undercover again, this time pretending to be Lexie, while Rob becomes increasingly obsessed with whether the new murder connects to his childhood. Confused yet? It makes for bad writing but great TV, and I won’t tell you whether it all comes together in the end or not. It’s slower than the other shows on this list, but if you want a thriller that keeps getting weirder, this is it. Dublin Murders October 14, 2019 Two detectives are dispatched to investigate the murder of a young girl on the outskirts of Dublin, but as the case of the missing children intensifies, both are forced to confront the darkness that lies in their past. If you’re already missing Juliette and Silo 18, these sci-fi shows should keep the mystery going. “Silo ” just wrapped Season 3 on Apple TV and it finally broke things open. For the first time, we got to see the world before… following congressman Daniel Keene and journalist Helen Drew as they investigate the events that precede the world we’ve come to know in Silo 18. Now, we have to wait for the final season (Season 4 will be its last), and I’ve pulled some other great shows with similar worlds and themes to help pass the time. If you loved “Silo,” here’s what to watch next. Silo May 4, 2023 In a ruined and toxic future, thousands live in a giant silo deep underground. After its sheriff breaks a cardinal rule and residents die mysteriously, engineer Juliette starts to uncover shocking secrets and the truth about the silo. Loved ‘Silo’? Watch: ‘Severance ’ It’s time to go from the fluorescent lights of Silo 18 to the fluorescent lights of Lumon Industries. And while a show set mostly inside an office may sound a bit boring after three seasons of “Silo,” let me assure you it is NOT. “Severance ” follows Mark Scout (Adam Scott), an employee who’s undergone the “severance” operation, where his work-self and home-self have no shared memories. His “innie” only exists inside Lumon, while his “outie” exists only outside. Aside from being an awesome premise in and of itself, there’s a great mystery at the center. Just like “Silo” asks: what’s really outside? And in later seasons… why are they in the Silo to begin with? “Severance” asks: what is the severed department really working on? See, Mark and the rest of the team in Macrodata Refinement (which means…?) are doing work they don’t understand. And just like “Silo,” the deeper you get into the mystery, the darker things get. When a mysterious colleague appears outside of work, it begins a journey to discover the truth about their jobs. If you loved the underground mystery, watch: ‘Fallout ’ The closest premise match on this list, “Fallout ” takes you to another underground bunker — this time called a “vault.” Set 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse, the show follows Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell) in Vault 33. She’s optimistic, sheltered, and really believes in the society she grew up in… until things start to crack open. Just like Juliette wants to know what’s beyond the “Silo ”’s walls, so Lucy wants to know what is outside her vault. Except she gets there much faster, entering the Wasteland that in turn destroys pretty much everything she thinks she knows about the world. Now, part of the fun of the show is that you get a wider look at the world. You follow the young soldier, Maximus (Aaron Moten), as well as the Ghoul (Walton Goggins). Both of them operate in different layers of society and different parts of the wasteland. All that gives “Fallout” a much bigger scope. And the tone is different too. “Silo” is dark and moody, with very little humor. But “Fallout” is bright, colorful, funny, and kind of bonkers. But it still elicits the same questions: what’s outside, and how did it get like this? Fallout April 10, 2024 The story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird, and highly violent universe waiting for them. If you loved the conspiracy, watch: ‘Paradise ’ “Paradise ” starts as a political murder mystery. Who killed former President Cal Bradford? That’s what Xavier Collins (Sterling K. Brown) has to find out. He’s the Secret Service agent who’s assigned to protect Bradford (James Marsden) and fails when Bradford is killed on his watch. Just like Juliette, Collins doesn’t know who he can trust… and he keeps digging anyway. But that’s only the tip of the mystery iceberg. I won’t give the big turn away, but just remember this show is on my list for a reason. There are people in control you can’t see. There are mysteries you don’t expect. And an entire world outside the White House that isn’t quite what it seems. I’ll leave it at that. Go watch it. Paradise January 26, 2025 The tranquility in a serene, wealthy community inhabited by some of the world’s most prominent individuals explodes when a shocking murder occurs and a high stakes investigation unfolds. Wildcard pick: ‘Pluribus ’ This is a wildcard pick. There’s no bunker to get out of. There’s no apocalyptic destruction. In “Pluribus ,” however, there is a virus-like infection that turns most of the world’s population into a hive-mind (kind of like the Borg in “Star Trek ”) of pure bliss. Except Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn) isn’t affected. She’s miserable, confused, and angry that the entire world is so happy. It shares the same DNA as “Silo ” in the way Sturka questions how everyone is just okay with this setup. She’s the same kind of stubborn outsider as Juliette, refusing to accept the answers she’s given. You still get a controlled society, but in “Pluribus,” it’s much stranger, and the exact parameters of control are psychological instead of physical. And tonally, it’s closer to “Fallout ” — funny, bizarre, warm at times, then jumping all the way into disturbing. But the themes are almost the same: is a safe, peaceful society still what you want if you have to surrender a part of your humanity to get it? While Apple TV devices and Apple TV aren’t one and the same, keeping podcast viewers inside Apple’s ecosystem could ultimately benefit the company’s flagship streaming service as well. Recently, we have seen numerous streaming competitors like Netflix and Disney+ add video podcasts to their libraries as a way to compete with social video platforms like YouTube . So by making it easier for podcast consumers to watch and listen to their favorite shows inside an Apple interface, Apple could keep those users from spending more time on competing streamers. There is one downside to the Podcasts redesign, however. With tvOS 27, Apple has removed support for podcast shows added through a custom URL. That means membership-only or other private podcast feeds that users manually add to Apple Podcasts will no longer work through the app on Apple TV 4K. The feature remains available in Apple Podcasts on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro, and Mac, so this appears to be a tvOS-specific limitation for now. Maybe it’s just because I’m old, but when I listen to music, I prefer to just hear one song end and the next one begin without a DJ-style transition between them; however, I am sure I will give it a try eventually. The second addition is Hi-Res Lossless Audio. Apple says Apple Music subscribers with compatible external audio equipment can now play Hi-Res Lossless tracks through Apple TV 4K, giving listeners access to the service’s highest-quality audio through a home entertainment system. That won’t matter much if you’re simply listening through your television’s built-in speakers, but it could be a meaningful upgrade for Apple Music subscribers with higher-end home audio setups. What features are missing from tvOS 27? There are also two notable omissions in the new software update compared to what many Apple enthusiasts were expecting. First, Apple’s newer AI-powered Siri experience is not coming to current Apple TV devices with tvOS 27. Apple TV will continue using the existing version of Siri for now, but as the company continues to expand its AI approach, it seems increasingly likely that AI will eventually become a larger part of the Apple TV experience. There have been reports that Apple is preparing a new Apple TV 4K with upgraded hardware capable of supporting more advanced Siri features, meaning the company could be saving that experience for its next-generation streaming box, whenever that eventually launches.
