Happy September Equinox 2026! - The Sun Today with Dr. C. Alex Young
✨ Everyone says “fall is here” and moves on. But the September equinox is hiding some of nature’s strangest phenomena — 4-day sunrises, both Poles bathed in daylight at once, an equinox that happens on two different dates, and an aurora supercharger you probably don’t know about. Here’s what really happens at the September Equinox 2026…

🌌 The equinox is an AURORA SUPERCHARGER!

Around the equinoxes, Earth's magnetic field lines up just right with the solar wind (the Russell–McPherron effect) — stronger, more frequent auroras! 💚

Dark northern nights are back. Season starts NOW.

☀️ Equinox Mythbuster: Day & night are NOT exactly equal today!

Earth's atmosphere bends sunlight and the Sun is a disk, not a point — so day wins by a few minutes.

The TRUE equal day/night (the "equilux") comes a few days later! 🎯

🌅 The longest sunrise & sunset on Earth are happening NOW.

South Pole: the Sun is rising. North Pole: it's setting. Each takes ~4 DAYS!

And for a brief window, BOTH Poles are in daylight at once ☀️☀️

🌍🍂🌸 September Equinox is coming! Sept 22, 8:05pm EDT (Sept 23, 00:05 UTC).
The Sun crosses the equator heading south — fall up north, spring down south!
Fun fact: it happens on TWO dates — Sept 22 in the Americas, Sept 23 elsewhere! 🤯

Why does an eclipsed Moon turn red? 🔴

Sunlight bending through Earth's atmosphere loses its blue, keeps its red. Thursday night the Moon is lit by every sunrise and sunset on Earth at once — 93% copper-red, one blazing white edge.

Three nights from now, Earth's shadow swallows 93% of the Moon. 🌕🌗

Thursday night: a deep partial lunar eclipse — an almost-Blood Moon. The Americas see it all; no glasses needed, just look up.

Last deeply red Moon until end of 2028.
