Not great Bob!

Much of Buncombe County and WNC is now in a D3 drought (Extreme).

The ENTIRE STATE of NC is in some sort of drought.

You'd be foolish to think any warm-up will last forever at this time of year.

A long-lasting run of 70s will be with us Wednesday to Wednesday, but it'll get chilly again after that.

Meteorological winter comes to a close across North Carolina (Dec-Jan-Feb).
For the Greensboro area it was:
- Cooler than average (nearly 2 degrees)
- Still had several warm spells
- Above average snowfall
- Below average rainfall

An amazing day of weather.
The second largest temperature jump on record for Greensboro.
24 in the morning to 69 in the afternoon.

A look at snow totals across North Carolina from this major winter storm.

The whole state saw at least 2", and most saw more than 6". The highest reports were around a foot and a half!

North Carolina completely covered in snow after our major winter storm this weekend.
February 2, 2026 at 10:22 AM
We've got some snow on the way this weekend.
Amounts will vary across North Carolina.
Some areas could really score. Here in the Triad, expecting lower amounts closer to the 3 inch range. Some get more, some get less.
Good luck!

We've got another storm heading into the weekend.
Be ready for snow, up to several inches.
It starts late Friday night and ends late Saturday night.
Dry and fluffy for a change.
That dry air could cut into amounts for some, but others will hit jackpot in heavier bands.
Travel problems!

We're trending toward a second winter storm in a week.
This one, very different.
All snow!
Could be some impressive amounts too.
Watching all day Saturday.

Outages going up in NC. Make sure all your devices are currently charging if you still have power.

We've got a big mess on the way.
In all seriousness, this has me concerned.
The combination of a few inches of sleet on the roads, then a ton of ice in the trees, will lead to a lot of us stuck at home - in the dark - maybe without heat going into a very cold week.

You know it’s a serious storm when the governor comes out in the storm shirt.

A major winter storm will hit us with sleet and ice this weekend. Enough to cause power outages for many. Be safe. Avoid travel after about 3pm Saturday. Have supplies to last a few days.
January 22, 2026 at 9:53 PM
Our winter storm for the weekend looks to start as snow and sleet sometime Saturday but finish as sleet and freezing rain on Sunday.

A big mess. Be prepared to be stuck for a few days - possibly without power.

I'm very concerned about this winter storm.
High totals of either snow, sleet or freezing rain are coming to North Carolina.
It will be different in all areas.
Either way, travel will be a mess for days.
Icy areas could lose power.
Very cold air follows the storm.

There are different types of winter weather:
There's fun - and then there's dangerous.

This weekend's event is looking dangerous in NC.

Timing: Saturday *and* Sunday
Impacts: Dangerous travel and power outages

Snow amounts and ice amounts could be very high, and stick around for days.
January 20, 2026 at 4:46 PM
We're not going to know the exact details of the weekend storm for a few days.
Still, it's time to talk about it.
Impacts to travel and power could be large in the Carolinas and last a while.
Good to have a plan, because it's been a while for us to have a bigger winter storm.

HEADS UP: Aurora (Northern Lights) may be visible Monday night across North Carolina.

Timing: Anytime after sunset through the night

Tips:
- Use night mode on your phone to try and help you see them.
- Get away from city lights.

Significant risk for either heavy snow or heavy ice or both across North Carolina and Virginia Saturday into Sunday.

Lots to be worked out, but the potential is really there for problems. Been a while since we had to worry about power outages with a winter storm. #ncwx

Nice little Sunday afternoon snow.
January 19, 2026 at 12:39 AM
Snow will be difficult to come by this weekend in North Carolina. Trends haven't been in our favor so far.
January 16, 2026 at 4:51 AM
The trend is there now for somebody in the Carolinas to pick up some winter weather on Sunday.

The question is who, how much, and all those details.

But, we have something to track!

COLD AIR COMING.... Wind chills will be in the low teens Thursday morning, near 20 Thursday afternoon, and low teens again Friday morning.

You know what to do. Bundle up and limit outside time.
January 13, 2026 at 9:02 PM
Some pretty nasty chill and wind on the way for Thursday morning here in North Carolina.
