Any time I hear someone pine for a post-scarcity economy I think about how I can buy 41,000 calories of flour for less than $10.
Tech bros have moved on to reinventing paganism, incredible stuff.

An atheistic outlook prohibits you from making moral statements about the world. A material only universe cannot have moral principles, and any attempt to establish them will fail. At *best* you can speak about preferences.
Do you have any philosophical intuitions that seem extremely obvious to you, but are highly disagreed about? E.g. moral realism vs antirealism, separation of mind and matter, possibility of free will, objects being able to have moral standing, existence per se as a positive good for humans etc

There are a lot of tips and tricks that can help our mental health.

But after researching and writing about this for years, the best advice I can give is:

Do real things in the real world with real people, occasionally hard, sometimes alone.

It has interested me for a while (I have never seen discussed) that while people love to yearn for screen adaptions of books, the reverse never happens.

"I desperately hope someone does a novelization of my favorite film" says nobody ever.

I have no idea why this is.
What’s your white whale tv/film adaptation that needs to happen

Just turned in final revisions on "AND LOKI IN HIS PRISON"

It's going to exist at last, everyone!!!

Cook your spaghetti in a paella pan.

Place dry noodles in pan. Add just enough water to cover them. Add salt. Cook at high heat.

When the noodles are done, *almost* all the water will have been absorbed/evaporated.

Noodles cook faster and they don't need to be drained.

I'll start: Caramelized onion freezes! When caramelizing onion do 2x, 3x, 4x & freeze some in a ziploc pressed flat in a thin sheet so it's easy to break chunks off. Or bulk caramelize in crockpot & freeze.

Becoming proficient in basic knife skills will make everything in the kitchen easier. It's much faster to use a single knife to prepare your ingredients than retrieve and set up a specialized tool, which is almost always more cleanup work than a knife.

You usually don't have to wait for the oven to warm all the way up before you stick your food in. Often, the food will cook better (read: more evenly) if you let it heat up with the oven!

(exceptions exist for food that is seeking a certain exterior texture, like chicken wings).

Pressure cookers reduce cooking tasks that normally take hours to minutes. You can have perfect beans (dry -> ready to eat) in less than 90 minutes. Glorious stock in an hour. They're magical devices.

The best way to thaw something is to take it out of the freezer the a day or two ahead of time.

If you forget though, the fastest way is by submerging it in lukewarm water.

(The real fastest is placing it in running water, but that's wasteful).

Similar to this, whenever you cook any saucy/soupy thing 10x the amount you're making and freeze what you don't eat. It's like 60% more effort for 1000% more output, and anything with that much water freezes indefinitely and flawlessly.

My freezer is full of pozole, spaghetti sauce, chowder, etc.

I have been beating this drum for a while. The AI tools are not the problem, they are a *symptom* of the deeper underlying structural problem of a university system that has been distorted into a credential mill.

Until the incentives are fundamentally changed, cheating will escalate in perpetuity.
Not sure if this is a hot take, but the apparently frequent cheating or borderline cheating with Ai in University seems to me less about Ai and more about how sick the system has gotten.

Compare for example to learning from a teacher to graft trees. In that case, cheating would be absurd. Why?

This is legitimately a stretch goal of mine.
A while ago I was doing talks for a book and ended up having lunch with a bunch of academics. There was this one guy who had a project to hear as little news as possible. He said it was going really well, and that his goal was eventually to not know who the president is. I think about him often.

I've been reading a lot about the distinctions between American Protestantism (AP) and Eastern Orthodoxy (EO) and this is one of the many distinctions I've found between the two.

AP places a large focus on the interior emotional experience of the believer. EO more on the lived out actions.
I write about people who became famous for saying and doing horrible things so I routinely get asked this question. "Did they really believe it?"

Look, I get the curiosity, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what's in their hearts. They put evil into the world.
What's in Tucker Carlson's heart? Racism. What's in Anne Coulter's heart? Racism. What's in Ben Shapiro's heart? Racism (and sadness about his inability to please a woman).

If you're not using adblockers on your web browsers, please do. Ads are the root of much evil on the internet, and how all the companies you hate make their money.

There's no reason to ever see an ad ever again.
This is mostly the thesis of my "the root of everything you hate about the internet is advertising based revenue models" argument.

I don't think it's possible to have user-friendly incentives in a product that makes all it's money via ads.

It's always been very interesting to me that I've never seen an AI doomer express any self-skepticism about their claims. It's always "we are completely correct and if you don't believe us it's because you're not smart enough to get it."
this is aaron swartz' opinion of lesswrong, by the way! from his lesswrong account, no less

People keep saying “oh so you want OPEN BORDERS” as some kind of gotcha and like. Yeah. When I was a kid you could just drive into Canada. On accident, even. It was great, and I think we should do that instead of kidnapping children. Normalize being normal instead of being kidnapping weirdos

Why stop with just gambling? All advertising is evil and should be disallowed.
It is actually possible to regulate gambling advertising, and while designing such a regulatory regime could be complicated, it can also be very simple, such as "there shall be no gambling advertising".
I stopped gambling (mostly) last year and the way the books hound you with notifications/emails to Get Back In The Game should 100% be illegal
like if Coors could text drinkers "15 days since your last beer ... sounds like you need an ice cold Coors Light" and also their phone could give them a beer

Surely this is an industry that's going to be ripped apart by LLMs. Is that bad? I don't know.
Have just read this extraordinary sentence in New York Magazine

!!!

'A ghostwriter who had a “slow year” made $164,768, most of which ($107,768) was from ghostwriting famous people’s Substacks.'

I think about this phenomena a lot. I wonder what the world would look like if the titanic investments of financial and human capital into computers in the last 50 years had been allocated somewhere else.
Yeah, one of the things that's sort of undergirding this, is that even classically programmed computers are simply so good at solving computer-shaped problems, that we have been busily trying to turn everything in the world we can into a computer-shaped problem for at least the past 40 years.

@adapalmer.bsky.social @bluejo.bsky.social do you know why it is that hardcover books are always produced with book jackets vs. printing the art directly onto the cover?

Jackets annoy me so I take them off, but then I can't admire the art! Kids books print the art on the cover, why don't novels?

While I understand the reactions most people are having to this announcement, I think almost everyone in the comments has a fundamental misunderstanding about why most people are going to college in the first place.
