TLDR starting this September, if you sell a digital product into the EU you have to have a proper vulnerability reporting process in place and report security incidents that affect your customers: by December 2027 you have to have SBOMs and conformity declarations and 5 years support and updates

Because these people have enormous incentives to block regulatory efforts to ascertain how they made their fortunes, who their counterparties are, and how much of it can be taxed. And they will spend a lot of their crypto wealth to achieve those aims.

Another clear and knowable downstream consequence of letting scammers get rich off crypto was that that money would boomerang back into politics in ways that were highly likely to try to skirt around fundraising laws and distort policy incentives.
