This reporting is a love letter to my community, & to the skill & thought that organizers bring to every action. I come from a movement & organizing background, before I was ever a journalist. I think you can see shadows of that in this story. 💕

For @xtramagazine.com, I spoke to organizers of the trans joy rally outside Barclays before the Liberty/Fever game, as well as the organizers of the “Trans People Belong in Sports” sign distribution inside the arena:

“We believe that fans made this league, so fans can lead the way.”
Anti-trans hate came to the WNBA. Fans are fighting back | Xtra Magazine
From organizing a “Trans Joy Rally” to handing out supportive signs at games, fans aren't letting anti-trans discourse define the league

The Brazilian Theatre Tradition Behind Britain’s Green Surge - PopularResistance.Org
The ideas behind Britain’s Green surge began in a Brazilian jail. In the 1970s, Augusto Boal invented a technique he named Theatre of the Oppressed. It sought to awaken audiences by making them active participants, turning spectators into “spect-actors.” Boal had drawn the idea from educator Paulo Freire, whose Pedagogy of the Oppressed argued that conventional education was a tool of domination, a “banking” model where teachers deposited facts into passive students. Jailed by Brazil’s military junta in 1964 and driven into exile, Freire proposed instead that teacher and student examine the world together, aiming at conscientização, or critical consciousness.

We haven't done a public cops-in-the-head workshop in years. I've been itching to get back into it, and also pass the tools along. Join us May 9 for this (and lunch!) in Queens! www.tonyc.nyc/meltingpoint... Early Bird tix til April 16.
A flyer that has a background of a snowy landscape. There's a silhouette of a head, with an illustration of an brain with dripping icicles. The text says "ICE OUT: A cops in the Head Workshop. This two-hour workshop adapts the Cops in the Head technique described in Augusto Boal’s The Rainbow of Desire, in which participants investigate the internalized voices of oppression (aka "cops") that block us from taking action. We will focus on internalized anti-immigrant messages, improvise both the “cops” and potential “anti-bodies”, and rehearse tactics so we are collectively prepared to confront and engage them wherever they show up. This technique gives us space to shift out of being frozen, feeling conflicted as a bystander, or experiencing apathy, and align our actions towards our own beliefs (after we evict the cops-in-the-head!). Participants will receive facilitation packets to adapt the exercise to their own spaces. Lunch will be provided after the workshop. Facilitated by Sulu LeoNimm & Liz Morgan. www.tonyc.nyc/meltinpoint Make the Road NY 104-19 Roosevelt Ave, Corona, NY 11368. May 9, 2026 11am-1pm. Sliding Scale $35-$90. Early Bird $20.
