Surprised that more people aren’t talking about this part of Carney’s speech to the EU parliament. He might have the most experience of anyone on the planet when it comes to these issues and I am just a dog on the internet, but this seems like a real red flag to me.

This is evil, and if you can't immediately recognize it as evil, you are a moral idiot.
Nick Beckstead, noted longtermist and "effective altruist,” just comes out and says it:

"But it now seems more plausible to me that saving a life in a rich country is substantially more important than saving a life in a poor country, other things being equal."

So here’s the thing: as much as I kvetch and say that I want to get off the rollercoaster and emotionally disengage from the fucking Jays, today is an off day an I’m already at loose ends. And it’s very likely that in less than three weeks, every day is going to be an off day for a very long time.

It strikes me that a foundational problem here is treating “toxicity” as something objective and quantifiable rather than fundamentally subjective. And two problems with objective standards are (a) people will figure out how to game them and (b) they’ll reflect the (subjective) views and interests…
Let's address a couple of questions here:
1) is this user toxic?
2) are they making a threat sending trans people to camps?
3) how do you address harassment?
4) how does toxicity currently work? How will it work?
Apologies, this should be a blog.
@aaron.bsky.team hi Aaron, sorry to bother you but can you explain why it's not against ToS/Community Guidelines for cis people to threaten trans people with concentration camps? People have been actioned for less than this - why is this not also considered toxic discourse?

I’m not so sure—the thing about protectionism is that once people/businesses/industries are protected, they don’t like give up the protection.
So I was chatting with a college mate whom I also went to grad school with (both universities Stateside), and talking about the EU “associate member” proposal.

His $0.02? “You know that once Trump is gone, almost all Americans will be fine going back to the older arrangements, right?”

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.

The story I heard is that when they moved to three divisions per league, the Jays had a choice between the Central and the East, and Beeston went for ticket revenue from visiting Red Sox and Yankees fans, and that’s why he’s my enemy forever.
The three best teams in the American League this year have been the Rays, Yankees and Red Sox -- and it's not really close. Because of the seeding that rewards division winners, only one of them can make it to the ALCS. Winner of Yankees-Sox will face Rays in the division series.
