2 weeks ago, this gentleman arrived on a cold, miserable day w/eyes swollen shut, mucus clogging his nose, & a rasp in his lungs loud enough to be heard through a closed door on the other side of the room. I’ve been throwing everything I have @ him to kick these infections, & it seems to be working.

Chip thinks we’re torturing him, but we promise this is for his own good.

It may look bad at first, but given prompt, proper care, turtles have amazing healing capabilities. The fill-in where the seams didn’t quite line up is still a bit soft, but I feel decently confident that this turtle will be back out in the wild before winter. Keep going, girl—I believe in you!

Babies! First hatchlings of the season. These Diamondback terrapin babies came in back in June as eggs, when their mother was run over by a car. Mama turtle was already dead, but I was able to extract the eggs and incubate them. Soon they will be released near where their mother was found.

This is an interesting case to watch, to see how much of this turtle’s shell regrows so it can sufficiently hide inside it and be safe in the wild. The turtle has been energetic from day one, and it really deserves a wild future. Time will tell. Video on fb & insta. #turtlerehab #wildlife #turtles

Special delivery! A mail carrier found this injured box turtle on his route and went the extra mile to deliver this precious cargo to us for help. This little lady is patched up & energetic, so we have high hopes for a full recovery, though we never make promises because anything can happen.

When this young snapper came in, his eyes were so bad I wasn’t sure if there were any eyeballs left underneath all that ick or if they had any vision. In just a few weeks of intensive care/meds, he’s almost completely healed. He can see again, and soon he’ll be back out in the wild where he belongs.

Even though this little turtle only lived a few months, he or she was a brave and special turtle, and I wanted to share their story. It started, as all too many of the stories I tell do, with a turtle being hit by a car. The eastern painted turtle mother was on her way to lay eggs when she was struck by a vehicle.

Tiny and Titanic Terrapins

You'd think turtle siblings would resemble each other, in size, color, behavior, etc. That's not always the case. Here's a quick look at some diamondback terrapins that were hatched from the same clutch of eggs (the mother unfortunately was deceased but we were able to save the eggs and some of them were viable and hatched out). Because of when they hatched, they had to be overwintered in care, and when they were released in the spring, these siblings who started out looking nearly identical couldn't be more different.

Snapping turtles are known for hunting with their formidable “snap”, and for being nature’s clean-up crew since they eat carrion, but they are indeed omnivores and eat a lot more vegetation than people think. A fellow turtle lover sent me this video capturing a snapper going after some greens.

“Maggots at Midnight” — The Magic Treehouse books take a very weird turn, or, just another day in the life of a rehabber? You decide.

A huge thank you to the finder and her mom who made sure this little painted turtle got help before these fly eggs hatched into maggots and ate the turtle alive.

$20 can save an endangered species from dying in your backyard. If you have an in-ground pool, or even stairs that are open leading up to a pool deck of an above-ground pool, you need a wildlife rescue ramp. These allow any small animal that falls in a chance to escape drowning.

This is who those bait boxes are killing. This old man, a ~20-pound snapping turtle, died needlessly with rodenticide poison and other opportunistic infections taking hold in a weakened animal. He died slowly, painfully, and coughing up blood in the arms of one of our rehabbers. Preventable.

This is why it’s important to never leave an injured turtle on the side of the road, even if it looks like a goner. Not only do they pass in less pain/more comfort in rehab, but we can check for eggs to harvest/incubate, possibly saving them to hatch/release where mama turtle was going to lay them.

Some of our long-term residents got to experience the wild outdoors recently after spending the winter inside, and one of them dug around until he found a gigantic lawn grub and ate it. I guess you could say he’s a fan of grub hub…get it? Ok, I’ll see myself out.

Things that only happen in a rehabber house, lol. Rehabbers and rescuers, what are some unique exchanges you’ve had with family members due to your animal work?

American values are under attack. H.R. 1897 is scheduled to be voted on by the end of tomorrow. The ESA has saved 99% of listed species from extinction, but if H.R. 1897 passes, your favorite animals could be gone forever.

📣Urge your Reps to vote NO on this un-American bill: https://bit.ly/4tlqJZh

Meet Buttercup! She is a yellow-bellied slider looking for a forever home. We will have a booth to meet her and other adoptable turtles at the JCC of Greater New Haven (360 Amity Rd., Woodbridge, CT) on Sunday, May 3rd, from 10am-2pm. This is a free, family-friendly, educational adoption event.

Turtle season is upon us. Watch for turtles in the road and help them cross in the direction they were going. If it’s injured, take it with you and call a rehabber. The free app and website Animal Help Now uses your location to find the rehabber closest to you.

Today is National Pet Day! We’d like to remind you that pet turtles are a lifelong commitment and not an easy, “starter pet”. Most common pet species get very big. If you want a turtle, adopt, don’t shop, never steal from the wild, & never dump pet turtles into the wild.
