Far-UVC. What is it? How does it inactivate airborne pathogens? Will it give you sunburns? If not, why not? And if they work, why aren't they everywhere?

In my latest explainer video I dive into all these questions and try to make some sense of it all.

It’s been 10 years to the day since the Brexit vote. The sun is shining, where are all the Brexit parties and parades? I was told this was the UK’s “Independence Day”, what happened?

Oh right, it was a total (and predictable) disaster.

While the virology in this article is interesting, there are fundamental issues in the underlying assuptions made by the authors.

This research group believes that deep lung fluid is identical to Hanks Balanced Salt Solution. What this means is that the pH dynamics of the aerosol are incorrect.

Over the past decade, vaping has become a popular alternative to smoking, with many teenagers picking it up. The thought being that vaping is less harmful, if harmful at all.

The question is, are they?

What happens when you vape?

In my latest explainer video I dive into this.

These are the accounts that Elon promotes over on X. This is why the discourse on that app has gone down the tubes, he’s turned the place into the Mos Eisley Cantina.

Airborne disease transmission doesn't just affect human populations. In collaboration with Herek Clack at the University of Michigan, my team has been funded $2M to study mechanisms of bird flu decay in the air, and to explore novel mitigation strategies.

Study explores airborne bird flu decay in livestock environments
Discovering how the bird flu virus degrades in the air around livestock and how engineering solutions can effect that degradation quickly and efficiently are core aims of a new University of Michigan ...

Aerosols are very small, have a high surface to volume ratio and can readily reach super saturation. This combination makes them a unique environment for chemical reactions. We had a paper published in JACS that looked into the rate of chemical reactions within and on aerosols.

I just wanted to give a shout out to @melunaka.bsky.social and thank them for making french subtitles (and fixing the english ones...) for my "SARS-CoV-2, CO2 and You" video! Looks great!
Hi, we fixed and fully resynced the English subtitles, and translated them into French! You can download them here:

Since measles is coming back, here's a question:

What is the "half-life" of airborne decay of measles?

Answer: We have no idea. People think it's long (1 to 2 hours).

Why don't we know? Funders largely felt there wasn't a need to measure it since it was managed with vaccines.

This is the 5th video on my channel to pass the 1k mark, with 'SARS-CoV-2, CO2 and You' passing 4k views (randomly, on today as well).

I got this question that I thought some might find interesting.

In short, why does the CO2 levels in a hockey arena trend upwards even though it has an upgraded HVAC?
Hey @ukhadds.bsky.social, quick question about arena experience. I sat in the upper part for a Sharks game, 17k people. CO2 at 700 pregame, linearly to 2k at end. SAP Center says it upgraded HVAC to meet CDC/ASHRAE (below). Any idea why CO2 kept going up w/ high ACH?

This horrific. Tuskegee 2.0.

Denying children healthcare ‘to see what happens’ is as unethical as it gets.

How this happens:
DOGE cuts -> experts leaving -> untrained ideologues hired -> unethical study on African children being approved.

Gross.
Exclusive: A Rolling Stone investigation uncovered irregularities in the ethics review of a $1.6 million research grant to examine the effects of a birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine in the African nation of Guinea-Bissau.
