We don't believe long-time-loving as an extremophilic category is an appropriate way to view energy-starved life. Most data indicates that once energy flux is restored (lab or in situ) these cells resume growth at a more rapid pace, suggesting they are not obligately bound to slow growth
We propose anergiobiosis as an alternative framework. anergiobiosis describes the state of maintaining cellular viability when energy supply falls below thresholds supporting cell division but allows maintenance metabolism. Our concept is mechanistically grounded and testable.

Over the past decade, a toxic fungus that destroys cheese rinds has been popping up in cheese caves throughout New England.

Zhiwwei gave an excellent talk in our ISME session. They demonstrated inhibitory substances (distinct from ROS) in solid solid media are generated during autoclaving but can be washed out.

Solid media is not inert!
