Exactly. I am tired of seeing the “I always knew”/“their work was actually bad” takes whenever allegations emerge. Sometimes—often, actually!—bad people find their way into good spaces and make good things. And you’re not better than the folks who were taken advantage of for “always knowing”

as soon as i heard each of these were running in their own (not huge but also not trivial) VM instance i wondered how long it would be before people figured out how to use them for arbitrary compute. i *think* networking is pretty locked down so it’s not a free botnet *yet* but hey free compute..

i've been playing some games on an HDR-enabled display, and as far as I can tell, just as "audio dynamic range" means "everything is too quiet and you can't hear shit", "HDR display" means "everything is too dark and you can't see shit"

Left a stick of butter out so I could have soft butter for my toast. Or at least I *thought* that’s why I did it. Turns out I actually did that so my cat could knock the butter onto the floor and lick it

When I played XCOM I only took a shot at 75% chance or greater and wrote down whether it hit or missed. Over the course of the campaign, I missed more than half my shots. lol
The way to relieve this is Ludovico Technique conditioning where people are forced to roll 95% XCOM:EU attacks thousands of times until their brainwaves show that they have accepted True Probability.
i know ive had my fair share of "Oh come on!" moments in xcom(2) and missing 95%s but what is the way to relieve this? I know phoenix point tried to do it with the "true aim" system but the cone of fire system was sooooo awful for weapons like the cannon, it was just a 50/50 chance to hit anything.

i think the average rationalist would say in good faith that they are not racist the way people think, and that virtually every other person, after hearing them out and discarding every premise they thought was incorrect or incoherent, would conclude that they very much were
reading this, it does seem as if “rationalism” is an elaborate intellectual architecture designed primarily to support the idea that if you were born white, male and clever then you are the genetic elite and entitled to rule.
This is another great, approachable explainer on “the rationalist wackos who have managed to take over much of the AI industry, and who now have tons of money and political power.”

It IS fun telling my West Coast pals I’m from an earthquake zone. They say “there’s no fault lines there” and I just say “correct :) “
Before you @ me about these two claims:

- seismic zone: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1811%E2... (which is either still seismically active or still producing aftershocks)
