British people will walk past a Starbucks, Burger King, Costa Coffee, Taco Bell, Blank Street and not even notice. Then they'll see an independent shop called Al-Badr Supermarket and cry about how the UK is being taken over by foreigners.

The pitch here seems to be, ‘we’ll build the houses and infrastructure we failed to build during the 14 years we were in government, but we’ll do it in the most damaging and lowest quality way possible’.

Most of the words I read are domesticated and raised in books and articles, but occasionally I find words out in the wild. These are my favourites.

Doomsdays scenarios aware always humans vs AI but never AI vs wasps. I dunno, AI might have really strong opinions on wasps; it's very people-centric to assume we'll be the main foe, rather than collateral damage in the wasp wars.

We really need to reinvigorate the word "stonking", because I can't think of any other way to say that this is an absolutely stonking beast! Araneus diadematus draped in an intense brick red. You'd be excused for mistaking it for A. alsine, as I did for a second! @britishspiders.bsky.social

Probably the best thing that can happen as a man is when a non-hat wearing man in your group decides to try to wear a hat. Sit down. We're now going to list every fictional character that has ever worn a hat at you. This is what you get for having notions.

The number of days in a week is insufficient. There should be eight days, with a three day weekend, and bank holidays should be moved to Fridays instead of Mondays.

As Ed Miliband leaves his post as energy and net-zero secretary, a final tally:

There have been an incredible 251 newspaper editorials attacking him and his approach to net-zero since the start of 2024

That amounts to two editorials a week, mainly in the Sun, Daily Mail, Times and Daily Telegraph.

One of my fave things in York Minster: a medieval wren stalking a spider. It reminds me that history isn't only kings and battles. Someone, centuries ago, found joy in the same things we still notice today. It's a reminder of how much we have in common over our differences.

Don't threaten me with a good time! Is there anyone who doesn't want the government to spend more money on *something* - and if people who can afford it pay more tax to fund it - what's not to like?
