Pollera woman selling medicinal herbs, we bought some chamomile. Historically mistreated and marginalized, Andean and Afro-Bolivian women are now starting to gain respect, but generations of stolen opportunities have limited the ability of many families to move beyond street vending. #Travel #LaPaz

The Witches Market, despite becoming a tourist attraction, still remains one of the best places in #Bolivia for traditional rituals and remedies.

Ancient Incan and modern Aymara and Quechua traditions still live on in languages, dress, and culture of the Indigenous Andes peoples.
Above the cobblestone road are suspended dozens of colorful umbrellas. People stroll along looking at wares in the colorful painted colonial style buildings.

On Sundays the streets of the high plateau #ElAlto become one huge market known as Mercado 16 de Julio (name of the main street). Vendors call out their wares and the prices in a repeating chant that carries through the streets. Some set up in tents, others weave through the crowd with carts. #🇧🇴

One thing that I love about traveling is shopping, and #Bolivia provided no shortage of opportunities. From pop-up street fairs, booths in parks, makeshift convenience stores on every corner, and even carts traveling the streets, there was never any concern of being without a snack or sundry 🍫
A pop up market of tents turned this brick paved street into a hall of shops. Protected from rain by clear sheeting above, decorated with red and green triangle pennants, it's a festive and busy place to buy a Spiderman shirt or a phone case.

The Valley of the Moon 🌛 Named for the strange landscape, it's a fascinating place to walk through. Most of this region is built on unstable clay like this, which is why they didn't build a subway.

With the guardian Illimani visible on the horizon from everywhere in the city, it felt just like seeing Tahoma/Rainier from every vantage in Seattle 🏔️

The Teleferico gondola system is the largest in the world, flying over homes and squeezing between skyscrapers to connect the valleys together.

I traveled 6000 miles to visit LaPaz Bolivia 🇧🇴 known for centuries as Chuqi Yapu by the Indigenous Aymara people.
On a plateau and high valley of the Andes, this city sits at over 4000m or 13000ft elevation in the area of El Alto. More than double the altitude of Denver, it requires time to adapt.

It did take me a little longer to get home than I intended, but I'm finally back after 3 weeks abroad! I had some fantastic adventures and can't wait to share them with you 😊 Now where did I pack my toothbrush...

I'm excited to announce that after 7 years I'm finally pulling out my passport again! ✈️ The shop will close on July 30 and reopen on August 21.

For my safety I'll be checking out of socials while I'm gone; I can't wait to share my travels with you when I return!

This month's #manisawarenesssquad we round out #PrideMonth by honoring those who took part in the #StonewallRiots in 1969. You've probably heard stories about Marsha P Johnson (who was not actually present, I recently learned!) and other queer people including BIPOC and trans people who bravely stood against the cops. But I want to take a moment to mention someone you might not know about. Dave Van Ronk was a musician in the Greenwich neighborhood, just an ordinary straight white guy with no business in a gay bar like the Stonewall. He was having dinner nearby when he heard the commotion, went out into the street and immediately started throwing stuff at the cops along with everyone else. He was one of the first people arrested and was beaten alongside the others. We often see these heroes of major events like the Stonewall and have trouble seeing ourselves in their shoes. Maybe you're not a brave, powerful Black trans woman. Maybe you're not even queer and don't think you're affected by the violence being perpetrated by our government. But you don't have to be any of those things to see injustice and stand in solidarity. Be like Dave. Just put down your fork and grab a brick.

I've been making a lot of Ms Frizzle necklaces now that I'm an auntie! 😁 This is one of my recent faves - a dollhouse teaset glued and then strung with aurora beads ☕
I'm wearing a gold glitter polish over a pearly white polish, and holding the gold polish bottle. It's named Pot of Gold on the black label. Draped over my hand is a necklace I made, featuring 8mm round white aurora beads, flat gold beads, and a dollhouse teaset strung in! The little teacups, teapot, creamer, and sugar bowl hang off the sides of the bead string in a whimsical design.

I've updated the formula for solar #VoyagetoVenice to work around some pigment quality issues. As a bonus it also doesn't smell Blue anymore 😄 There's a couple old formula bottles still in my inventory if you prefer it, and they're half price in the shop until they sell out 🩵💜

I've always had thin, peely nails that prevented me from growing any kind of length. They grow quickly and are paper thin, separating easily and tearing as soon as they extend beyond my fingertips. I admired my parents' long thich nails and hoped I'd get them when I grew up, but that didn't happen. Instead, when I started swatching polish on my nails I taught myself how to apply acrylic nails. It took some time for me to accept that I'm not doing anything wrong with my body and that artificial nails are a valid way to participate in the community. There's such a stigma around using enhancements, and as I learned, much of it is rooted in anti-Black racism and ableism. With acrylics I can design my nails in the length and shape I want, and change or remove them anytime. I can have sturdy, beautiful looking overlays when I need to do swatches, and practical nubs when I need to do physically demanding work. I hope more people will learn about the history of artificial nails and work to eliminate the stigma, racism, and shame.
