New blog post: Possibly the last record review I'll ever write. It concerns an obscure album recorded in Boston in 1982.

This little book, which I bought from Scholastic Book Services for 50 cents when I was 9, is one of my prized possessions. Written by a high school junior, it satirizes the hippie culture of the time with clarity and wit. Big influence on me.

Here's a link to a blog post I wrote in February after the Lyres' second to last show ever, in Austin. It includes video of two songs I filmed there. The music lives on, at least. RIP, Jeff Conolly. You left quite a mark on our world.

I just watched the new Mary Beth Barone special on Netflix, and I can’t tell you how much I dislike her. Actually I could, but I don’t feel like bothering.

My kind of celebrity feud is when writers and translators argue about the accuracy of a movie.

What's worse: Having a colonoscopy, or attending your high school reunion? In both cases, the prep is the worst part. (In the latter case, the prep is having to go to high school in the first place.)

It is a pity that Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain never had the chance to do a podcast together.

Happy 100th to the King, Mel Brooks. I freely admit that I completely ripped off the title of a column I wrote in the '80s for Boston Rock magazine, Cave 76, from a 2000 Year Old Man routine. Thanks, Mel.

New blog post, part 2 of 2 (file under Memoir). In which I visit the Hudson River Valley for a "vacation" with no clear endpoint. Welcome to Phoenicia, only an hour and a half from Great Barrington by car if the traffic isn't too bad!

Speaking as a music fan, is there anything better than finally getting to see a musician who you've been a fan of for decades, but gave up music years ago, finally get back on a stage and play those songs you know and love so much?

So Father’s Day, like hay fever season, has again crept up on us. Like hay fever, it’s long overdue for a complete overhaul and defunding. Anyway, here’s a Father’s Day column I wrote a couple of years ago that elaborates on my feelings about the holiday.

Among the musicians playing on the deck of the Titanic was a double bassist. Why didn't he just throw his instrument overboard, jump in after it and use the bass as a flotation device? (Yes, I know the thing would eventually sink, but what the hell, emergency.)

I hate the opening monologue segment on talk shows. It's been going on for 70 years, yet nobody seems to want to get rid of it. I don't care who the host is, either. The jokes suck, and the cringeworthy, pandering, blatant attempts at enlisting the audience to applaud throughout are the worst.

Worst plays to turn into musicals? Here are my choices:

Death of a Salesman
Whose Life Is It Anyway?
The Crucible
The Normal Heart
Waiting for Godot
Rhinoceros

Oddly enough, these would all be good candidates for operas.

I'm sick of the Oscars. It's as bad as the State of the Union, except instead of one asshole talking for 90 minutes, it's four hours of many, many assholes talking interspersed with applause, unfunny jokes and bad music. And there will be a crappy memorial reel with all the focus on the musicians.
