Sting sets sail for the West End, docking The Last Ship at Theatre Royal Drury Lane for a limited run.Based on the shipyard closures that devastated the area near to where Sting was born and raised, this is clearly a story that’s very close to his heart.The plot is pretty much all in the title: the shipyard is forced to close and the workers are determined to finish and launch 'The Last Ship'. There are a few side stories along the way, including one character battling illness, and a love story. However unfortunately neither had quite enough depth for me to really become emotionally invested in the characters. The emotional anchor never quite managed to drop.Shaggy joined the cast for press night as part of his 'two nights only' stint as The Wallsend Ferryman. It was a bit of a cameo role though and while it was good to see him involved, I didn’t feel he added a huge amount to the production.The rest of the cast however were outstanding. Sting has created a decent score here and bouy can the cast blast it out. The music is definitely where this production finds its strongest current.The set design is also pretty impressive for a limited run and you can tell they’ve put a few pennies into getting this ship seaworthy. There are some great visuals, and the whole thing certainly looks the part of a shipyard.The Last Ship is a slow burn and a long voyage at almost three hours. It takes its time getting where it’s going and I did find myself occasionally wondering whether we were ever going to leave port.However if you can pick up a cheap ticket, it’s worth setting sail for. Just don’t expect a show that will sweep you away emotionally.⭐⭐⭐

Cats has been revived again but this time things are slightly different at the Jellicle Ball.Lovers of the feline musical will notice a few changes in this production however this is my first time seeing this live so I went in with open eyes and somewhat high expectations.Never one to miss out on a day at this picture purrfect theatre in the glorious sunshine it goes without saying this is a musical that should be seen at night to get the full effect intended.Costumes seem minimalist compared to previous productions but give a dystopian stripped feel, as does the set.Choreography is more contempary than balletic which mirrors Drew McOnies previous productions and feels like a fresh new take on the show.The whole cast are talented and don't miss a beat, however for me Melanie La Barrie (Old Deutronomy) was a stand out and of course Grizabella (played by understudy Taziva-Faye Katsande) is the show stopper as usual with Memory.Overall a good day out in the park with the family if you don't mind a few stray Cats lurking around.⭐⭐⭐⭐#musicaltheatre #londontheatre #westend #westendtheatre #musicals

Sweeney Todd has opened a new barber shop, swapping the infamous Fleet Street for Birmingham Rep Theatre.This was my first time seeing The Demon Barber of Fleet Street on stage, having only seen Tim Burton's film adaptation many years ago, so I went in eager to finally experience Sondheim's masterpiece as it was intended.The biggest draw for me was the casting of Ramin Karimloo in the title role. His Sweeney was a man hollowed out by grief; cold, detached and emotionally vacant, haunted by the ghosts of his past rather than driven by unbridled fury. Personally, I was hoping for a more menacing Demon Barber, someone whose mere presence could make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. That said, I appreciate that Sweeney is far more than a straightforward villain. Vocally Ramin was, as always, impeccable. Every note was delivered with effortless precision, although at times I found his singing almost too polished. I wanted a little more roughness around the edges to reflect a man whose life has been sharpened into a razor by revenge.Meow Meow's Mrs Lovett leaned heavily into caricature, dialling up the eccentricity and a few laughs from the audience. While the comedy landed, I never quite believed the relationship between Lovett and Sweeney. Their twisted partnership should be the beating heart of the show, equal parts darkly funny, unsettling and tragic. Here the chemistry felt lacking, meaning the deliciously macabre push and pull between them never fully came to life.Overall this production feels like a pie that's missing a few key ingredients. The foundations are there however too many opportunities are left on the barber's chair. I wanted more blood, more guts, more menace, more shock and above all, more emotion. Sweeney Todd should leave you feeling as though you've had a close shave with something truly horrifying. Beetlejuice is finally haunting the West End and it's time we all took a trip to the Netherworld, this is the most hilarious musical out right now! The script has been modernised with various pop culture references and David Fynn is a master of breaking the fourth wall with perfect comic delivery. We had Rachel MacDougall as Lydia. You would not know that she has only covered the role a few times, she was so comfortable in the role, reminiscent of a certain comparable goth with teen angst, Wednesday Adams.Of course West End regular Aimie Atkinson nails Delia getting plenty of laughs, as does David Hunter as Adam.Prepare to be possessed with your next musical obsession!⭐⭐⭐⭐

3rd time lucky and we finally got to see Amber as Elle Woods! She has certainly made the role her own and brings new life to the score with powerful vocals. Probably the best production of Legally Blonde we are likely to see ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kiss of the Spider Woman is one of Kander and Ebb's lesser known musicals however this production is a must see. Fabian Soto Pacheco (Molina) and George Blagden (Valentin) brought the house down, there are big things ahead for these two! Anna Jane-Casey brings Hollywood diva to Aurora and entrances audiences in the titular role of the Spider Woman. This is probably the best adaptation we are likely to see ⭐⭐⭐⭐
