What if he never stops?

I went into a town I had been avoiding, noticed a woman staring at me, and only afterwards realised who she was. That recognition brought a much bigger fear to the surface: what if he never really stops watching from the edges of my life?

Empath restoration: reclaiming my attention and my life

Healing is starting to look less like endlessly processing the past and more like reclaiming my attention, my future and the parts of my life that were pushed into the background for far too long.

Three steps forward, two steps back

I am trying a different way of measuring progress now. Not by whether every day was good, but by whether I did something that moved me towards the life I want to build. Sometimes that looks like writing, boundaries or rest. Sometimes it is simply helping a tiny…
Three steps forward, two steps back
I am trying a different way of measuring progress now. Not by whether every day was good, but by whether I did something that moved me towards the life I want to build. Sometimes that looks like writing, boundaries or rest. Sometimes it is simply helping a tiny creature because I can, even when nobody is watching.

Changed forever

I thought that relationship had changed my life forever. What I can see now is that, even without the abuse, we were never heading in the same direction. For three years I became an accessory to somebody else’s life. Now I am back on track, not becoming someone new, just being me…

Eventually, reality gets the final word

A rainy Wednesday brought an unexpected realisation about credit, ego and what happens when reality no longer supports the story someone else has been telling. The day then went completely off-plan when yet another pigeon needed help.

I don’t need to understand him anymore

I used to need to understand him, to find the missing piece that would make his behaviour make sense. Now I know I will never have all the answers, and I no longer need them.

Busy, but not depleted

Some things take everything out of me and give nothing back. Other things can be exhausting and still leave me feeling better than when I started. Tonight I am noticing the difference.

The control I could not see while I was living it
I could see the lies, the double standards, the urgency and the endless bedtime dramas while I was living them. What I could not see was the pattern connecting them all: I had been trained to feel responsible for another adult’s moods, problems and emotional stability. Distance finally showed me how that responsibility became control.

The part that is still happening

I was coping with a difficult, exhausting day until one email from the court reminded me that some parts of the past are still very much happening in the present. I do not want another lesson from it tonight. I just want it finished.

Self-care doesn’t always look impressive. Sometimes it’s a hot bath, brushed teeth, food prepared for tomorrow, accepting a treat, knowing when to stop trying to fix something and finally sitting down with a new book. I’m learning that looking after myself shouldn’t be an emergency response. It should simply be part of how I live.

The thought is not an instruction

I know the pattern. I know what my brain wants me to do, and I have already decided that I will not do it. The challenge now is teaching my nervous system that recognising danger does not make me responsible for preventing everything that happens next.

When busy does not mean stressful

Today was full and busy, but for once it was not stressful. By twenty past nine I was in bed, relaxed and still alert, realising how long it has been since I reached the end of a day without feeling completely exhausted.

I didn’t lose myself. I learnt to make myself smaller
I didn’t lose myself inside the relationship. I knew who I was and what I wanted. What I learnt was that expressing it could bring criticism, conflict or another exhausting reaction, so I made myself smaller. The deeper control was the responsibility I felt for somebody else’s emotions and wellbeing. Recovery has not been about discovering who I am. It has been about finally having the freedom to be her again.

I no longer believe the lesson was that I cared too much, trusted too much or loved too deeply. Those qualities were never the problem. The problem was offering them without enough protection around them. Healing has not meant becoming colder. It has meant learning that empathy, loyalty and love do not have to come with unlimited access.

I have run out of day

A day that went straight from work into rescue, then home to washing swan wraps, caring for two pigeons and feeding everyone else. Tonight I am exhausted, feeling sick and very aware that my own self-care has been the thing pushed to the bottom of the list.
