Murdoch was never an existentialist, save a brief flirtation in the 1940s prior to writing novels. Brookner, however, is very much underrated.

The short stories/chapters that are maybe also autobiographical sketches in Tove Jansson’s Fair Play make it seem like it’s just an episodic thing & it is, but then they start to accumulate & the last five or six intensify certain things & the very last one topples the whole pile of bricks on you
