Day 26 - #quill

A Quillback (Carpoides cyprinus). A medium-sized sucker that inhabits local rivers with gravel/sandy bottoms.

If anyone has a good tutorial on doing scales…I generally avoid them like the plague, as you can see why here.

“Fish” can be both singular (one individual fish) or plural (multiple fish of the same species.)

“Fishes” refers to individuals of different species.

Comments due TODAY! Please Speak out for fishies that USFWS wants to delist.

There's probably a mine or other awful thing the orange turd wants to grant permission to, that wants to open up, and they can't grant lease while endangered species exist!
🚨 ACTION ALERT: USFWS wants to strip protections for native desert chub!
We need unique public comments in the docket before tomorrow. Do NOT copy/paste word-for-word— agency only counts unique submissions.

Cleveland Rocks (if you're a baby sturgeon): Before juvenile lake sturgeon were released into the Cuyahoga River last year, they received tiny acoustic transmitters - now, early data shows that many are sticking close to Cleveland Harbor. signalcleveland.org/lake-erie-ba...

The dam removals that get the most press tend to be superlative western ones, like the Klamath and Elwha—big rivers, big fish. For @biographic.bsky.social, I wrote about some equally vital, under-the-radar projects now restoring eastern streams, one old mill dam at a time.

"If eco-social anomie describes a societal forgetting, dam removal achieves the opposite—a collective remembering that cures our amnesia and unshifts our baselines."

Happy first day of fall!!

Did you know that fall is, perhaps counterintuitively, a great time to plant things? It gives the plant time to establish their roots in the soil so that next spring they can shoot out of the soil confident in the ground they’re in.

Unfortunately, media has taken the upper bound of one model estimate (among many) and run with it to say Lake Sturgeon *could* live for over 400 years.
This isn’t necessarily what the science says, and methods used are somewhat tenuous. Several other fish aging experts agree it’s an overestimate.

I love when people poke fun of northeast Ohio/Cleveland especially in Philly bc I point to this and all the other watershed wins the region has had since the passing of CWA - keep up the great work!
living fossil achievement unlocked 🔓✨

the US Fish & Wildlife Service was sampling near the mouth of the Cuyahoga River and recaptured 3 Lake Sturgeon that were tagged & stocked in 2025 (2 from Rivergate Park, 1 from the Boston Mills area).

all 3 have nearly doubled in length in one year's time.
