Pirates 4, Royals 3: Vinnie Pasquantino's two-run homer in the seventh turned a 2-1 Pirates lead into a 3-2 Royals lead. Then Rafael Flores Jr.'s two-run homer in the eighth turned a 3-2 Royals lead into a 4-2 Pirates lead and that's how it ended. Pittsburgh sweeps the three-game set. They've won four in a row. They'd be playoff bound if they played in the AL West and would be in a fight for the last Wild Card spot in they were in the East or Central. But this isn't European soccer. We have divisions and leagues and playoffs and stuff. If we didn't we'd have a three-way race in the final week between the Brewers, Dodgers, and Rays for something we'd probably call the "MLB Title," those three, Atlanta, and the Yankees would be bound for a big, year-long international tournament than ran side-by-side the 2027 regular season, and the Red Sox, Phillies, Padres, and Cubs would be frantically fighting over spots in a couple of different year-long international tournaments. Meanwhile (a) the Rockies and Angels would be bound for the minor leagues while the Giants would be fighting off the Athletics for the final relegation spot; and (b) Rochester, Las Vegas, and Oklahoma City would be poised to join MLB next season. [Editor: you say all that like it's a bad thing] Man, that would be the best thing. It'd positively own. Indeed, I just depressed myself by thinking of it and knowing that it will never be.
