Sun Halo

Even on a hot summer day, there can be ice in the sky. This sun halo was created by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in high-altitude clouds. Isn't it something?

Climb Every Mountain

On a rocky ocean beach sits a large glacial erratic boulder, painted white. Two driftwood logs are leaned up against one side. A young girl climbs one of the logs, her dad close by with his arms up to catch her if she falls. Her mom stands nearby and her younger brother is already on top of the boulder, looking back at her with one arm stretched out. "P'Quals", the White Rock, is over 4 metres (13 feet) high and weighs 486 tonnes (536 tons). It has been kept white by paint since the early 1900s, but before that, it was white on top due to the guano from seagulls perching on it. This made it a good landmark for First Nations and 19th century sailors, including Captain Vancouver. In the photo you can see some of the paint chipped away at the back of the rock, revealing its natural grey colour. In the background of the photo is Canada's longest pier, which is 470 metres (1,540 feet) long. White Rock, BC, Canada 🇨🇦

World's Largest Tandem Axle Truck

A ridiculously large, green, rear dump hauler sits in the sun, defying attempts to do it justice and also get the whole thing in the picture. Some adults pose for pictures against its tires; they are about half as tall as the tires are. The Titan 33-19 can carry 350 tonnes, and is 17 m (56 ft) high with the box raised in dumping position. Built in 1974, it is the only one of its kind, and was used in mining until it was retired in 1990. Sparwood, BC, Canada

Friendly Faces

The Golden Tree in The International Friendship Garden has three women in its branches. It's a sight to see when the sunlight hits it just right in the middle of this beautiful garden.

Three 32-pounder smooth-bore guns lie on the ground with white and yellow wildflowers growing around them. They have the royal cypher of Queen Victoria on them, and two of them say 1841 and one says 1844. The red brick building in the background is the powder magazine, restored in 2001. They are usually mounted on reproduction oak carriages at Prince Edward Battery, PEI, Canada.

Reversing Falls

At low tide, as seen here, the Saint John River flows into the Bay of Fundy. Naturally, right? But at high tide, it reverses, and the river flows backwards!

The river flows from bottom right to top left, past a rocky point of land with sparse vegetation and a few small trees. Barely connected to the land is a large, dark chunk of rock with nothing growing on it. The rock is bare because it gets submerged when the tide comes in. The difference between low and high tide is 8.5 meters (28 feet)! The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides in the whole world.
