German Grand Prix, (qualifying), Hockenheim, 22-23 July 1988.

Luis Pérez-Sala (Minardi-Ford), Stefan Johansson (Ligier-Judd), Julian Bailey (Tyrrell-Ford) and Pierluigi Martini (Minardi-Ford) all failed to qualify.

German Grand Prix, (qualifying), Hockenheim, 22-23 July 1988.

Erich Zakowski's Zakspeed Racing got both cars into the team's home race. Local hero Bernd Schneider qualifying in 22nd position, teammate Piercarlo Ghinzani in 23rd.

In the home race for Günter Schmid's Rial Racing team, Andrea de Cesaris qualified solidly in 14th position. The Italian quickest of the Ford Cosworth DFZ V8-powered entrants.

Alessandro Nannini continued to impress at Benetton. The Italian qualifying 6th fastest and best of the non-turbo runners.

Gerhard Berger's Ferrari F1/87/88C was undamaged after a high-speed spin. As was often the case during 1988, Berger was best of the rest behind the McLaren-Hondas, over 1.5 sec away from Senna's pole time.

At Hockenheim, Ayrton Senna (McLaren-Honda) clinched pole position for the German Grand Prix. The Brazilian failed to better his first session lap time, likewise teammate Alain Prost. Senna making it seven poles from nine races for the season so far.

With Nigel Mansell still not fully recovered from his Canadian Grand Prix wrist injury, Geoff Lees filled in at Lotus. The 31 year old Englishman finished bottom of the timesheets in 29th.

Winner of the previous week's British Grand Prix, Niki Lauda was the leading normally aspirated runner, 5th quickest (1 min:37.778 sec) in his McLaren-Ford Cosworth-MP4/1B.

At Paul Ricard, Alain Prost (Renault RE30B) led a home 1-2-3 during the first qualifying session for the French Grand Prix. Prost almost seven tenths quicker than Didier Pironi (Ferrari 126C2). René Arnoux 3rd in the other Renault.
