After a news-induced anxiety attack right before bed last night, I've put myself on a news diet at least until after the inauguration. Or until 2029, maybe.
It feels especially unsafe to be a woman or minority (or both) right now. I'm not a head-in-the-sand person, but I also need my sanity.

I may have stayed up until 2 a.m. last night to finish watching the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice. It's possible I have seen it dozens of times, in addition to my annual rereading of the book, but I couldn't not watch the last episode right then. I needed the serotonin hit of the resolution.

Many comparisons being drawn between social platforms, naturally, with heavy emphasis on what makes Bluesky different/ relevant. Surprisingly, I'm seeing a lot of pushback from Threads users. It's personal for them. But this is just a reminder: Threads is a Meta product. Z is still holding the keys.

Bluesky seems to be to be populated with people who have been harmed by social media in some way or another, directly or indirectly. We're all here, looking around, saying, "I've don't feel threatened here." I sincerely hope that is true for you and that somehow, by some miracle, it stays true.

When I was a buyer at a large indie, my rule of thumb was:
1 preorder: huh, let me take a closer look at this one
2 preorders: we need to stock this book
3 preorders: we should order enough to face this out
4+ preorders: this should be on front-of-store display

More detail: When booksellers get pre-orders, it's a quantitative and qualitative signal that there is like *something here* about a book. The avalanche of new books out there is hard to communicate if you're not in the industry, and pre-orders are one of vanishingly few signals. It is a real thing!

Here's the thing: my job is literally social media. Among other digital marketing roles, I'm a social media manager. Imagine that for a minute. Best and worst of humanity. So if it's a hot minute between my posts, that doesn't mean I'm not fiercely lurking. I lurk for a living.
