Same in Canada! Ottawa saw a large influx of Somali immigrants and refugees when I was in high school and the vitriol people repeated about them was wild. "They're welfare cheats! They stuff their families of 20 in a one bedroom apartment! They smell! They're dirty and bring roaches in!" Shameful.

To be fair, truly Maximum Sock would be to put them in the kid's stocking, but these are special socks and they're already getting a cheaper pair in the stocking. Plus my partner firmly believes stocking stuffers should never be wrapped.

Denialism alone was only officially criminalized recently; it is now included in the Criminal Code under "willful promotion of antisemitism". I don't know the details of what this guy said and did, but it may be that it was primarily denialism, rather than other forms of hate speech.

There are already a bunch of dickheads posting stills from it on here without a warning. I didn't like him any more than anyone else on this app, but FFS have some compassion for people who are sensitive to violent images due to personal trauma or whatever.

... It was kind of icky seeing journalists around the world declaring solidarity with a wad of xenophobic toilet paper filled with racist AF cartoons.

It's not exactly that for me. It's that I think it was kind of pointless, and probably will just drum up sympathy for him. I am reminded of the Charlie Hebdo incident in France. Like, those people didn't deserve to be shot, but also... 1/2
