I've officially lived in the United States for 10 years. A lot has changed in this nation over that time, especially as we've lost our grasp on something essential to what makes it great. Here's my reflection on what that is and what we can do to get it back.

Sometimes we look God's characteristics—like love and holiness—and treat them as if they're in competition or in conflict. But that's not the way we're meant to understand what God is like. Instead, we need to see God's attributes and characteristics as a whole.

No parent is perfect (which is easy to say, but hard to believe). And when you're a father who feels like a failure, celebrations feel more like accusations. But our real and imagined failures don't tell us the whole story—nor do all the messages surrounding us.

Modern sexual ethics are framed as being liberating, allowing people to be who they truly are. But they are limiting—reducing people's identities to who they are attracted to or sleep with. They cause us to think too little of ourselves.

No matter how we found ourselves there, being in a new church is challenging. It requires us to learn how to be—to be present. To be vulnerable. To rest. And that takes time.
