The fact that I have to explain this as someone from Gen Alpha, born from the start of 2010 until the end of 2024, honestly makes me worried about what the future will be like for my generation and for Gen Beta. 😔

The solution is simple: do not shorten the dates in a way that creates ambiguity. Just say that Gen X ran from the start of 1965 to the start of 1980, and Millennials ran from the start of 1980 to the start of 1995. No overlaps, no missing years, and no confusion.

Others try to avoid this by writing “1965–1979” and “1980–1994.” But that creates a different kind of confusion, because people start treating the final year as though it means “until the start of that year,” rather than the end.

The issue is how people write these dates. Someone may write “1965–1980” and “1980–1995,” while meaning that the first generation ends at the start of 1980. But people misunderstand that and write the next range as “1981–1996.” That leaves everyone born in 1980 without a generation at all.

Gen X began in 1965 and ended at the start of 1980. Millennials, or Gen Y, then began at the start of 1980 and ended at the start of 1995. The same pattern continues: Gen Z began in 1995, and Gen Alpha began in 2010.

I wonder how much more beautiful the world could be if we were allowed to be ourselves, without the limits adults place on our personalities. It is especially strange when adults themselves seem so broken. You only have to look at the wars, the poverty, and the pollution to see it. 🤐

But at the same time, they tell us to explore the world, learn, and grow beyond the generations before us. Somehow, they rarely seem to understand that these two things do not actually work together.

It is one of the most interesting things to me as a child looking at adults. In most ways, they want us to be just like them, especially when it comes to their values and rules.
