A new media release is now up on the NMSMF website informing the world of the unveiling of the Nelson Mandela statue in Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow on Friday, 9th October at 4pm. It will be a fairly short public ceremony and all friends are welcome.

16 Commonwealth High Commissioners attended, plus Ruth Mompati, the then Chief Rep. of the ANC in the UK. Twelve years later, on 9th Oct. 1993, Mandela came to Glasgow to accept in person the Freedom of Glasgow and of 8 other local authorities which had followed Glasgow's example.

45 years ago on 4th Aug. 1981 Glasgow awarded its Freedom to Nelson Mandela. He was still on Robben Island so it was accepted by Dr. Alex Ekwueme, then Vice-President of Nigeria, from Lord Provost Michael Kelly. See John Stevenson's video of 5 years ago at mandelascottishmemorial.org/40years

50 years ago on 19-6-76 a meeting of Anti-Apartheid activists constituted the Anti-Apartheid Movement Scottish Committee. After a year of an informal co-ordinating committee a more formal structure was necessary. The new body worked for 18 years, until apartheid ended and ACTSA Scotland was formed

Seth Mazibuko was a student leader involved in the 1976 Soweto student movement which organised mass protests against the apartheid government’s decision to impose Afrikaans as a medium of instruction in black schools.

16th June is the 50th anniv. of the shooting of protesting children in Soweto, sparking the Soweto Uprising, and also the 40th anniv. of the re-naming of Nelson Mandela Pl., then home of the apartheid S. African Consulate. Mandela Pl. will be the site of the statue of Mandela from 9th Oct. 2026

South Africans in the northern half of Britain voted in Glasgow,and the Anti-Apartheid Movement Scottish Committee was one of the bodies invited to appoint official obervers.Watching South Africans of all races casting their votes together that momentous day was truly a privilege, and unforgettable.

On 26th & 27th April 1994 South Africa held its first free non-racial election, ending whites-only rule, electing a new Government and making Nelson Mandela the country's President. The 26th was for infirm voters and was also the day for exiles to vote abroad - including in Glasgow City Chambers.

Concrete foundations have now been laid at the site in Nelson Mandela Place of the coming statue of Nelson Mandela, ready for the installation of the plinth and the statue itself in due course. The pavement has been relaid on top, to await October.

The contract is now signed for Alan Herriot to produce that statue of Mandela.He is already hard at work on the clay, and casting in bronze at Powderhall Foundry will be complete for unveiling in October. Solidarity with the 600,000+ people affected by terrible floods in Mozambique. Southern Africa is facing increasingly disruptive weather events (though #climatecrisis is due to Global North countries & businesses) - but the colonialism-rooted debt crisis makes it harder for governments to deal with.
Floodwaters are rising. Families are fleeing. Needs are growing by the hour.

Severe flooding has affected 600,000+ people in southern Mozambique, triggering new displacement.

UNHCR is supporting the Government-led response and stands ready to scale it up.

Yesterday, Lord Oates raised the lead pollution from colonial-era mining in Kabwe, Zambia, in the UK House of Lords with peers calling it a "horror" and a "shame"
