AI hinders education. Learning always requires effort, and effort-shortcuts always impede learning

This is the Sun's surface, the photosphere, seen as we've NEVER seen it before. 🔭

The Hawaiian Islands give you a scale.

Those thin filaments?

They're magnetic boundaries shaped by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) previously ONLY theorized, and FINALLY observed.⚛️🧪

We've never seen the Sun in this much detail before
The highest-resolution imagery of the Sun's surface ever taken reveals dizzying currents, and clues about our star's magnetic fields.

🔬 Your tax dollars once paid a physicist whose own colleagues told him he was wasting the university's money.
In 1951, Charles Townes sat on a D.C. park bench and worked out, on the back of an envelope, how to force molecules to release coherent radiation.

Emmy Noether was born #OTD in 1882.

She made groundbreaking advances in abstract algebra, but is probably best known for her eponymous theorems articulating the deep connection between symmetries and conserved quantities in physics. 🧪 ⚛️ 👩‍🔬

Hands have brains
A brilliant grad student in the group I did my postdoc in wrote all his papers by hand on yellow legal pads. When I asked them about it they said the slower writing process matched their thinking speed better.
The “writing is thinking” posting will continue until a single freaking person in Silicon Valley has figured this out
